Psalm – Chapter 31

  • Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God. Psalm 31:5 – While we can find many psalms alluded to or quoted in other parts of scripture, Psalm 31 is among the most recited in scripture. Jonah, Jeremiah, Paul, Stephen, and even Jesus Himself speaks of this psalm in their recorded words. Likely the words of verse 5 sound very familiar to you for they were Jesus’ final words on the cross before He died. In this psalm we see that David is within some deathly trouble, his life is wasting away, and enemies are plotting to take his life. Instead of trusting in his two hands to save him from this trouble, David places his life in the Lord’s hand for He had been the one who had saved David’s life in every season of past trouble. As we look back at our own story, likely we can see the Lord’s hands within each and every troubled season. It was Him who provided the way out, and it was Him orchestrating the rescue from the very beginning. God redeemed us from that trouble, not our hands nor anyone else’s hands. So when the new trouble arises, why do we commit our life into any other hands to save us? Why do we trust our own strength to defeat the enemy? Why do we lean on worldly devices to handle the pain? It’s always been the Lord’s hands that got us out of the trouble before, let’s then refuse to place our life now in any other hands but His. • My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors! Psalms 31:15- David humbly admits before God that he realizes his everything is in God’s hand. His life, his future, his provision, his hope, everything. We too need to come to this same understanding that David did that our everything is in God’s hands. This though shouldn’t be something that creates worry as if you have lost control, it should create an overwhelming peace within you because the God who has all the power in the world is taking care of your life and future. A God who has consistently showed His great love for you is watching over your life for you. So praise God that our life isn’t in our hands but His! So today walk in peace that your everything is within the loving hands of an all powerful God. When we remember this, why would we need to worry about anything? • Because of all my adversaries I have become a reproach, especially to my neighbors, and an object of dread to my acquaintances; those who see me in the street flee from me. Psalm 31:11 – For some our struggle will be too much for them. Too much for them to walk alongside and too much to even listen about. That can been overwhelming to us when we reach out for help but they step back and away. What we must remember is that this is not how everyone will respond. Yes, some won’t lean in, but others will. You have people in your story who are willing to lean deeply in your pain with you and walk with you. Count me as one if I can be for you. You also have Jesus, an ever present help in our time of need. Never leaving, never overwhelmed. Don’t let the few people who walk away from you settle in your mind no one will help you. You have help available, ask for it. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1748
