Psalm – Chapter 140

  • Guard me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from violent men, who have planned to trip up my feet. The arrogant have hidden a trap for me, and with cords they have spread a net; beside the way they have set snares for me. Selah Psalm 140:4-5 – Who comes to mind first when you hear about men who are wicked, arrogant, and are setting hidden traps for you? As we navigate this crazy political climate it’s sad how focused we can get on the ones we call our “enemies” and solely fix our gaze on the work they are doing in our life. Yet in this psalm the writer does acknowledge the presence of his enemy, the focus is on God and His work in his life. Let’s seek to be like the psalmist within our story. Don’t let the enemy have your focus when God is doing much bigger and much better work than they ever could. Each day choose who you’re going place in your spotlight. Who’s your choice for today? • I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will execute justice for the needy. Psalm 140:12 – As you read through the psalm, it’s clear that the psalmist David was under pressure from an enemy. Violence was on their hearts, evil was on their tongues, and their intentions was to take out David. Here we see David praying to the Lord within this season for help. He asked the Lord to remember him and to let the efforts and traps of those who are coming after him backfire on them. What I love about verse 12 is how after the prayers have been made, David is reminding himself of what he knows to be true about the Lord. That the Lord will stand up for those under attack and bring justice for the hurt that had been caused to them. Maybe right then, in that current season of his life, David wasn’t seeing that aspect of the Lord, but He knew what is true of the Lord and was resting on that for his help. We too may have to rest in what we know to be true about God even if in the current struggle we aren’t seeing that aspect of the Lord’s character play out. We can rest in knowing God provides even when we aren’t seeing that provision in front of us. We can rest in knowing God makes pathways for us even when right now all we see are brick walls in front of us. We can rest knowing God loves us even when life’s circumstances are telling you something different. Sometimes it’s going to take a faith in what we know to be true about God, yet don’t see currently, to be what moves us past the mess of today.
