- The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them. Psalm 135:15-18 – Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them. So while they may have mouths their words hold no worth. They may have eyes but they don’t see what they need to see. They may have ears but they don’t hear the words of life they need. When we begin to worship anything over God this is what can happen in our story as well. It’s not literal that we’ll suddenly not be able to speak or see, but things won’t work and be as they should. When we replace God as the focal point of our life with something else, everything else gets jumbled too. We won’t have the clarity to see what we need to because our eyes aren’t on Jesus anymore. Due to having a new focus off of God, His Words of joy and guidance will be drowned out by the noise of everything else. See this is more than just God being self-centered wanting all the focus on Him. It’s God telling us that when our focus isn’t on Him things aren’t going to flow in our life as they should be. - For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Psalm 135:5 – Agreed. I too, like the psalmist, believe the Lord is great and our Lord is above any other thing that we may place as a god in our world. What stands out though in this passage is the declaration the psalmist makes at the start…I know. He knew the Lord was great and above all gods. How? Well we see the psalmist recount the ways he had seen the greatness of the Lord in nature and also how the Lord had taken care of past enemies for Israel. These were proof of God’s greatness for our psalmist. What then would be your proof? If like me you agreed with the psalmist that the Lord is great and above all gods, what’s been the things that the Lord has done to establish such a belief? For me, I’ve seen Him do wonderful things in the lives of the people I know and love. Things that can’t be explained without a supernatural influence being involved. I to have seen God’s greatness in nature. I’ve looked upon the Grand Canyon and the Great Smoky Mountains; I’ve also seen a devasting tornado with my own eyes. I’ve seen people who were addicted set free and people who were about to end it all choose life. This was because of Jesus. So yes, I agree, God is great and above any other god.
