Psalm – Chapter 134

  • Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, who stand by night in the house of the Lord! Psalm134:1 – This psalm would have been addressed to the workers in the temple that kept watch over things at night. It says to them that they, even in the middle of serving God already, should come to give praise to God and lead others to do the same. For me this is a reminder to not ever settle and think I’ve given God what He deserves from me. Sure I went to church yesterday and even read my Bible and prayed today, but He deserves more than a morning or more than a moment. He deserves every second of every day and more. Always be seeking ways to fill your day with more time with Him. Time of getting to know Him better and lifting up praise to Him for the good He has done. If He is the One we’ll worship for all eternity in Heaven, let’s begin the praise today. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1498
  • Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, who stand by night in the house of the Lord! Lift up your hands to the holy place and bless the Lord! Psalm 134:1-2 – “Be not content with praise, such as all his works render to him; but, as his saints, see that ye ‘bless’ him. He blesses you; therefore, be zealous to bless him.” (Spurgeon) When I came across this quote from Charles Spurgeon over this Psalm, it set in motion the way I’m now reading this psalm. I think about the passage in Luke 19 when some of the religious leaders of Jesus’ day tell Jesus to rebuke his followers for praising him like they were. Jesus’ response? He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.” (Luke 19:40) Everything in creation is praising the Lord. The hills, the valleys, the stars, the animals, the whole of creation in its own way is praising the Lord. If our voices were to stop praising the Lord, the sounds of the stones would cry out to fill the gap of praise. This is just how worthy our Savior is of praise. Yet in this passage we are called to bless the Lord. Not it the manner of someone greater giving something to someone lesser, that could never be the case with us and God for God is eternally greater than us. We are though called to live a life that brings Him pleasure for that is a blessing to Him. For while we are called to praise Him like all the rest of creation, we who were made in His image have been given His promises, commands, and commission. We then are called to praise Him with our lips and go even further by blessing Him with our lives. Has then your lips been praising God? Has your life been a blessing to witness by the Lord? If the whole of creation sees God as worthy to be praised and if you have the wonderful gift of salvation as a part of your story, God deserves to be blessed by you today.
