- Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death…Psalm 13:3 – While short in length, this psalm certainly gets to the point quickly of where David was at with the Lord. Of course the Lord hadn’t truly forgotten about David and hid Himself from him, but David felt as if this was true. David’s enemies were surrounding him, he was crying out to the Lord for help, yet the silence he received from the Lord to his cries was crushing to his spirit. Here in verse three we see a line that was so healthy for David to pray, “light up my eyes.” David knew he wasn’t seeing the situation clearly. David knew better than to believe that God had abandoned and forgotten about him, but that’s how his vision, clouded by the discouragement and attacks, was seeing his situation. So David asked the Lord to uncloud his vision and lighten up the situation so he could see things clearly once again. As you read the final two verses in the psalm, while we don’t see a saving yet of David from whatever trial he was in, we do see his heart posture change as a result of enlightened eyes. His trust in the Lord is renewed and he is rejoicing with song for he remembers how the Lord had abundantly blessed Him. Maybe today then the phrase you need to pray is, “Lord, light up my eyes.” Maybe you too like David have vision clouded by discouragement, deception, and difficultly. It appears to you that God has abandoned you and forgotten about you. Pray then for enlightened eyes to see the situation unclouded by such things. For you are not forgotten and you will never be abandoned by our God. He can turn our mourning into singing, and He does so by opening our eyes to seeing His never-ending faithfulness and goodness in our story. - I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me. Psalms 13:6 – David is singing to the Lord his praises because of what God has done. There still may be struggles that need overcoming and enemies that need protecting from and directions that need to be given, but David is choosing to praise God for what He’s already done rather than waiting to praise Him till everything is right in his life. For you, some of the ways you need God to answer your prayers haven’t been answered yet. Though the answer hasn’t come, God is still good and has already done so much for you. In this waiting make sure God still has your praise. While in the future God is going to do amazing things for you that will inspire you to praise Him, He has already done so much for you that deserves your praising of Him even today while you wait. - How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? Psalm 13:1-2 – Your rescue may not come quickly. Your healing may not come when you ask for it. Your answer may not be given when you hoped it would. Like the psalmist here we too may sit and ask God “how long?” How long is it until the situation I’m in will change because you stepped in God? In these moments of waiting seek to keep the heart of the psalmist. He dwelt on all the past times God came through for Him and that grew his confidence in the truth that God would once again take care of him. We too can look back at our own story, see the ways God provided in past times of need, and use that as our way of believing God will once again come through for us. Waiting for God to move is never easy, but know His timing is perfect and He has a purpose behind the wait. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1730
