Psalm – Chapter 123

  • Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he has mercy upon us. Psalm 123:2 – Imagine you’re walking down a staircase and your foot slips. Immediately, without really even thinking about it, your hands reach for the handrails to catch yourself from falling. That’s the sort of image we need when we think about how quickly our reaction should be in going to God when trouble arises. Not eventually, but immediately. What would happen if you waited a few seconds to grab the handrail when falling? It would be too late and you’d already be down the staircase. What if you reached for something that truly couldn’t support your weight? You’d just keep on falling. Reach for God quickly and for God only. Make it your aim today, especially with the small stuff, to lean on God and reach for Him. Allow yourself to make good practice of reaching for Him so when the stumble comes your hands know right where to go. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1351
  • Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt. Psalm 123:3 – To fully embrace this passage, we need to see where our psalmist is at as he writes these words. Imagine enemies coming at you filling your life with attacks and words of hate, you come to the Lord for help, and the help seems to be stalled. The enemy is still attacking and still speaking, filling you to your overflow of what you can take, yet the help still isn’t showing up. You continue to pray for relief and the enemy just keeps coming. At that place, we see our psalmist still proclaim boldly his eyes are on the Lord. Yes, the attacks are heavy and more than their souls can bear. Yes, the mercy of the Lord that he is praying for seems to be slow in it’s coming. Yet, even there, his eyes remain on the Lord for his help. I know it’s easy to let the appearance of a lack of God’s mercy in your struggle to convince you that you should be looking elsewhere for help. The attacks of your enemy can be constant and the words so hate-filled and no end of all this seems to be in sight. Turn though your eyes to the Lord in these times. He is your portion, and He is your shield. He will be your salvation and your life. He will not leave your nor forsake you. You can have confidence that the Lord is going to show His mercy on those who love Him and follow Him when they are in seasons of struggle. In the waiting for said mercy, choose to believe in His promises and rest in the goodness of His word. Find comfort in togetherness with other believers and never cease to pray for your mercy to come. Even in the deep struggles, God’s mercy is what you need, so be willing to wait upon the Lord.
