- He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. Psalm 121:3-4 – When reading these verses the image of some war movie comes to my mind. When night has fallen and they are having to take turns being the lookout. Yet why are they taking turns and not all being the lookout? So some of them can actually get the rest they so desperately need. Here God is telling you that He is going to be on lookout. Meaning we don’t have to stay up, constantly worried, constantly straining our eyes to look for the enemy. He’s taking care of that which means we can relax and actually find rest. Today, are you trusting Him to actually watch out for you and your future? Maybe you feel the opposite of restful when you think about what’s to come and life in general right now. Trust though if God really is on watch, He’ll make sure we’re awake when we need to move. In the remaining time, rest in Him. Your worry, staying up all night, impatience, and stress isn’t going to help, but allowing yourself to rest in God because you trust Him to deal with what’s to come, even if your not in control, will. - The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. Psalm 121:7 – Upfront let’s just make sure we understand what this psalm isn’t saying so you don’t move forward believing God is working in your life in a contrary way than He said He would. This is not saying we’ll need see evil within our life nor ever feel its wake. We live in a broken, sinful world where evil is present. Even if we shelter our eyes and our lives from the world, we still will encounter evil even in our own lives because we still have our fleshly, sinful nature to deal with. See even the example of Jesus. One who the Father loves and someone who was perfectly sinless, yet He still felt the sting of evil and the pain of other’s sin. So what is this passage saying then if it’s not meaning we’ll never see evil or feel its sting in life? I do believe one aspect of this is that any who follow the Lord will have His supernatural protection within life. We will yes still see evil and even feel the effects of other’s evil choices, but there is a strong protection over those who follow the Lord from evil. Yet I see this passage truly reminding us that as a result of following the Lord, the evil of Hell and death due to our sin is something the Lord is going to keep far from us. He will keep our life from the punishment of sin because of our choice to follow Him. Our life is held in the palms of the Father’s hand and no one is able to pluck us out of His hand and no enemy can have victory over us there. While in this world we’ll still see trouble, we do take heart because Jesus have overcome the world. Evil is not a force Jesus can’t withstand. He is strong, He is steady, and His is able to save your life from the evil of death and sin. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2252
