- They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. Psalm 115:5-7 – What’s being spoken of here? The idols that the people of the day had created for themselves to worship. God spoke clearly here of how these creations of man would help them in their life. These idols wouldn’t bring the encouraging words or direction they needed to hear. They wouldn’t see the pain they were in. They wouldn’t be able to lift them up. They wouldn’t be able to walk alongside them. These idols brought nothing to them that they actually needed. So it is with the things we choose to prioritize over God. What we truly need in life, only God can give. For He can speak the words of life into us and see our struggles and walk alongside us. Be ever sure then that God has priority in your story. That He’s the one you look to and lean on. Nothing else will offer you what He can. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1343
- Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness! Psalm 115:1 – The setting of this psalm understood by commentators is that something must have happened where God’s people are calling out to Him for help. We don’t know exactly what that was, but God’s people are calling on God. Yet, all around are those who worship idols with their false gods literally in arms reach. They can see and feel their “god” while the worshippers of the Lord seem foolish in their eyes because they are crying out to an invisible God. Yet the glory and worship of these followers of God’s life wasn’t going to be given to any creation of stone or gold but to the one true creator of the world. Maybe in the moment we can’t see the Lord nor see His hand working on our behalf or even see His victory that He is promising. He though will still receive our glory and praise. For His love has remained steadfast for us throughout all time and His faithfulness to us has been displayed over and over and over again. Because of that, He’ll get our praise today. Not anything else in all creation; the one receiving our glory is the Creator. That choice may look foolish to the ones around us whose “god” they are leaning on is tangible and visible, but we know the reality of what their “god” can do for them and we know the truth of what Jesus can do. Our God is with us, He is for us, and He will always be worthy of our praise. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2246
