Psalm – Chapter 109

  • In return for my love they accuse me, but I give myself to prayer. Psalm 109:4 – May this ever be the attitude of Christians; to respond with prayer to the accusing, hatred, and evil of those around us and towards us. Sadly, even as I just scroll through social media, that’s not often what I see. I see such anger and hatred being spread through posts and comments. I hear the festering bitterness in people’s voices towards certain decisions made and certain politicians when I step into conversations with some people. I’m not here trying to shame any actions made by anybody, I know if that’s the path taken many could shame many of my actions too (that would be a beautiful cycle right?) My challenge for myself is to be the light God has called me to be, whether on social media, in person, or just in my own head. To hand things over to Him to handle, as we read in our passage today to do. I want the way I respond and react to things happening in this world to be attracting people to Jesus rather than giving them another reason to have a distain for Christians. Hopefully you want that as well. How then to handle the built up anger and stress towards people and things? Give yourself to prayer and let God take the brunt of all that. Let Him be your go to with all that so the witness you give to the world can stay healthy. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1337
  • May this be the reward of my accusers from the Lord, of those who speak evil against my life! Psalm109:20 – David is speaking to God about the evil being shown to him by an enemy. As we read through this psalm, even for me some of the language used here by David seems odd to pray for. Why would you pray for some of these heavy things to be done to anyone, even if they are your enemy? Yet this passage is not being given to us as an example of how to pray like we see with the Lord’s Prayer, but it is placed in scripture to remind us how God handles those who reject Him and attack His people. Our God is merciful, but if someone rejects His mercy then the only other option is God’s wrath which we see just touched on within this psalm. Now, we who have heard the words of Jesus and seen in scripture what’s to come for any who don’t accept God’s mercy, be in prayer for those who don’t know Jesus that they would come to know Him. Yes they may be rejecting Jesus now and yes they may even be attacking you like we see in our passage. Let us though continue to show kindness in response to their evil. Let us pray they come to know Jesus and turn to Him. They may be our enemy today, but that doesn’t mean we can’t pray and even hope for their salvation.
