Proverbs – Chapter 8

  • Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord, but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.” Proverbs 8:34-36 – As I write this devotion, Black Friday is coming soon and the ladies in my house are very excited about it. They are planning out which stores they are going to go to, and which ones they’ll wait at the doors to get in quickly. As we read this chapter, wisdom is speaking and urging us to pursue it just like this. Watch and wait daily at my doors, be ready to rush and pursue wisdom. For it is available and more precious than the finest of gold. Wisdom was with the Lord as He created the perfectness of creation and wisdom is available to be with us in our daily lives. Wisdom though must be pursued. No one is going to get that special Black Friday deal by just sitting at home not going after the deal. Nor will wisdom be found accidently or just land in our laps. We must pursue wisdom by seeking it out daily in God’s word and in community with other believers who have walked this life of faith longer than us. Let this not be an overly confusing task either, for God is not seeking to make this difficult to pursue and find. Pray for wisdom, read scripture, listen to wise and trusted counsel, and make every effort to be often seeking such things out. For Solomon outlines clearly for us in these verses the end of someone’s life who is content in their foolishness and doesn’t seek out Godly wisdom. Find life, blessing, riches, and favor from the Lord by letting wisdom by your pursuit. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2916

  • Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth, before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world. When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children of man. Proverbs 8:23-31 – While this is from wisdom’s point of view, I just wanted to share this section of scripture with you today. Remember the same powerful God that did all this is the one who loves you deeply and is wholeheartedly for you. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 679
  • The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate. Proverbs 8:13 – When God speaks and verbiage like this is used, pay attention. He says He hates certain things. Pride, something in our culture that is celebrated and embraced, God hates. Arrogance, thinking you’re better than everyone else, God hates that way of thinking. Using our words in way they were never designed to be used, God hates. If then you knew that your significant other hates something deeply wouldn’t you steer clear of it for them? Maybe you don’t have that same distain for it but because you love them you’ll stay away from it. Our love for God should lead us to walk away from things He hates.
