- Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well. Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets? Proverbs 5:15-16 – Understanding the context of this verse is key. Solomon is writing to his son to avoid adultery at all costs. He tells his son that when one gives themselves away to the seductress, we are giving away so much more than we ever imagined. Our honor, our wealth, our health, and our life is taken from us when we turn to the sinful lusts that are around us. We then are to instead “drink water from our own cistern.” Rather than finding sexual refreshment in the streets, we are to turn to the well of fresh water that God has provided in our spouse. What’s so beautiful about this is God is showing He is aware that humans have sexual desires, for He created such desires Himself! He also gave us a way to satisfy those desires in a holy way, through sex in a marriage. Why should spend our lives drinking sewer water in the gutter that offers only temporary refreshment of our thirst but carries with it disease that can take our life? God has a fresh and satisfying well of water to enjoy in our spouse. What if though you do not have a spouse to turn to handle those desires with? Then turn to the Lord as your well. Pray, ask for Him to deal with those desires at this time since there is no spouse in your story, and seek to find your delight in Him. Not having a physical “well” to find godly satisfactions in is not an excuse to turn to sinful ways of dealing with our desires. Be patient and be prayerful, and most importantly remain holy in this area. The cost of the “forbidden woman” is far greater than you can imagine. - Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love. Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an adulteress? Proverbs 5:18-20 – Why is a good question here. Why would you go after something that is only going to bring temporary pleasure and long lasting pain? Here it’s talking deeper than just not cheating on your girl or guy. God is asking this in relation to His connection with you. When you have something so beautiful with Him, why would you let go of all that to chase some temporary pleasure knowing it’s going to cause lasting problems? That’s what the pursuit of sin is. Remember the beauty of what you have with God and be willing to look past the temptation of the pleasure and see what you will be left with once the pleasure is gone. - My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding…Proverbs 5:1 – There is more “wisdom and understanding” we can be attentive to than just what God is offering us. Notice how the father in our passage says “my” understanding and “my” wisdom. In life our enemy is going to supply all sorts of false wisdom we can run after and lean into. Things like wrong teachings, pride, selfishness. Things that when we follow them governor our life in a certain way. Be careful then to follow the wise words of Jesus that we see all throughout scripture. The rest of this psalm paints a clear picture of what can happen when we chase after the wrong wisdom. Let’s seek a life that doesn’t even walk by the door of such things. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1687
