MICAH

Chapter 1

The word of the Lord that came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem. Micah 1:1 – Quick history lesson, Hezekiah and Jotham were good kings and Ahaz was not. That means that God’s Word came to Micah during the good seasons and the bad seasons. That the circumstances of life didn’t dictate whether God could speak or move how He wanted. Whether the season was good or bad, God continued to speak and move mightily. We must remember this. Know the state of the season you’re in doesn’t determine for God if He can speak to you or move for you. With Micah whether it was a good or bad season it didn’t matter. God spoke and used him in both seasons and will for you as well. God is way over and more powerful than the seasons of life we are in. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 662

For behold, the Lord is coming out of his place, and will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth. Micah 1:3 – The Lord isn’t still when it comes to our sin. Here Micah proclaims the message of God to God’s people about how God isn’t going to let them continue in their sinfulness any longer. Their sins of idolatry, stealing property from each other, and more was going to be dealt with an oppressive nation coming upon them. God is going to get up from His place and take care of things to straighten the walk of His people. What we must remember is this is exactly what God did for us too. God didn’t stay still with our sin either. Instead Jesus left the beauty of Heaven, came to earth, died for our sins, and rose again to offer us life. God didn’t stay still. God is now inviting you to not stay still in your sin either. Whatever sinfulness that you may be choosing to sit in a little longer, choose today to no longer sit there. If our God loved us enough to come down from Heaven to make a way for us to move out of our sin, let’s take that move. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2093

Chapter 2

I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob; I will gather the remnant of Israel; I will set them together like sheep in a fold, like a flock in its pasture, a noisy multitude of men. Micah 2:12 – God is about bringing His people together. We see that all over this verse. So the comments you’re tempted to make about someone, will it draw you closer to them or push them away? How about the choice your going to make, will it bring you closer or distance you from your church community? Here we are given a new filter for our words and actions. If something we say or do would actually cause division between us and our church community than likely that isn’t something God would lead you to do. If God is about togetherness of His people, why would He lead you to create division in it? I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 663

Woe to those who devise wickedness and work evil on their beds! When the morning dawns, they perform it, because it is in the power of their hand. Micah 2:1 – Be wise on what you devise. Here God speaks of how His people are lying in bed dwelling on and devising all the ways they are going to act sinfully the next day. The morning comes and what to they do? The very things they devised the night before. When we say yes to allowing sinful thoughts to run their course in our mind it makes the saying yes to the sinful action just that much easier. Which is why we much we wise with what we devise. If what we find ourselves dwelling on, thinking about, devising plans for are things God said to avoid, don’t be shocked when you find yourself gravitating towards those things in ways you hadn’t before. Know though the same happens when we dwell on the things of God. We begin to gravitate more towards Jesus and His will for our story. Choose today what you’ll devise plans for. Your sinfulness of your faithfulness. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2094

Chapter 3

Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision, and darkness to you, without divination. The sun shall go down on the prophets, and the day shall be black over them; the seers shall be disgraced, and the diviners put to shame; they shall all cover their lips, for there is no answer from God. But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin. Micah 3:6-8 – God says His Word will be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Here in today’s passage we see the lostness leaning on other powers than God will bring into your life. Yet we also see how full following God makes someone. As we continue more throughout these minor prophets remember their purpose was to turn the people back to God. Everyday we are faced with the choice to follow God or not. Remind yourself as we read on to see how chasing and devoting our lives to anything other to God will leave us lost and empty yet following God will bring the direction and purpose we’re looking for. Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who lead my people astray, who cry “Peace” when they have something to eat, but declare war against him who puts nothing into their mouths. Micah 3:5 – This chapter is coming down hard on the prophets and leaders of God’s people who were leading the people far from God. Here God highlights how these prophets would speak good messages to those who gave them things and messages of wrath on those who held back things from them. These prophets used the power they had of being a mouthpiece of God to benefit themselves rather than guide God’s people in the ways of the Lord. One way I see this passage applying to us is we need to be careful to not bestow what God has called us to bestow on people that only “deserve it” according to our eyes. Whether it’s forgiveness, love, direction, or the message of the Gospel, we shouldn’t be determining whether they get a chance to receive these things from us based on how they treat us. If God has called us to bestow these things on others, then we bestow these on others. This Christian walk should not be used as a means of getting what we want from others but a means of pouring out on others what they need.  How then have you been dictating what other’s receive from you when God has already directed you on this? Chapter 4

It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and it shall be lifted up above the hills; and peoples shall flow to it, and many nations shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Micah 4:1-2 – This is what God desires from us. He wants the world to lift Him higher than everything else in their lives and to seek deeper how to follow His ways. If a person we really love expresses a deep desire of theirs, don’t we often seek out how we can make that a reality? God is here expressing His desire to us so let’s see how we can start doing this in our own life. How can you today put God higher above all else in your own life? What’s a way you can show Him you want to know His ways better? You know His desire here, see how you can make that a reality in your life today. He shall judge between many peoples, and shall decide disputes for strong nations far away; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore; but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid, for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken. For all the peoples walk each in the name of its god, but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever. Micah 4:3-5 – For a people that had been under oppression for generations this promised life would have sounded extremely attractive. No war, being able to sit and enjoy his life, this would have been a dream. Yet why would Israel be able to step into such a dream? Because they had chosen to walk after the Lord. The other nations chose their own gods and are experiencing nothing like the peace spoken of in these verses. Yet Israel, who chose God, would taste such peace. Here Micah is seeking to open Israel’s eyes to their choice of who they are going to follow and the wonderful promises that are attached to following the Lord. Each day we too must make a choice of who we’re going to follow. Many around us aren’t choosing to follow the Lord and their life is filled with the results of not following the Lord. Choose though a different path and different results for your story. What things have often been what you have followed in the past? Identity them and be steadfast in your choice to no longer let those lead you anymore. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2096

Chapter 5

And in that day, declares the Lord, I will cut off your horses from among you and will destroy your chariots… Micah 5:10 – Be sure to understand the reason behind why God is removing these things and the things within the verses to follow. This is not just some punishment on them, but God is removing all the things that His people were trusting in other than Him. He wants them to see that the only thing one needs to trust in is God because He is more than enough. You as well need to hear and be reminded of this; we all do. God is enough by Himself to help you and satisfy you. When we begin trust in the assortment of other things our world offers us is when we get into the mess we see inside our passage. Today look for some things you have been leaning on that really shouldn’t carry your trust. As we move away from those things remember you won’t be left without, you’ll just be stepping back into leaning on who really can take care of you. And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. And he shall be their peace. Micah 5:4-5a – Understand this verse is a prophecy looking forward to the coming of Jesus. When Jesus comes He’ll stand and remain standing, no one will dethrone Him. And when Jesus comes He is going to guide and care for His people as a good shepherd would. When Jesus comes He would bless them with security and He would be their security. When Jesus would come He would be their peace in a season of life where peace was distant. This would have been such a message of hope for the true people of God who were existing in such unrest. For us today, understand Jesus has already come. He’s on the throne today and is shepherding His people as you read this. He is today keeping His people secure and is being their source of peace. Know you don’t have to wait and look forward for all this like the people in our passage. Jesus is here. Turn your eyes upon Jesus and find the help, salvation, and peace you need. Chapter 6

“With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:6-8 – This passage speaks for itself. The sacrifice that God required has been given by Jesus. So the mindset that we have to sacrifice anything the be good with God is off the table. If we have the life Jesus gave us then we’re good with God. So what God asks from us to love and walk with Him. That’s sounds like a pretty amazing life. Drop the complicated gospel that you have held onto because the life God wants with you now is one of freedom, love, and joy. Let’s today try living in the sort of life God is directing us to live in. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 667

“O my people, what have I done to you? How have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember what Balak king of Moab devised, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of the Lord.” Micah 6:3-5 – Remember. This is what God is calling His people to do here within this passage. To remember what He had done within their story. How He saved them from captivity, how He brought in the right people at the right time for them, and even how He took the curses of their enemies and made them a blessing. The hope was that a remembrance might move them to a rededication of their lives to the Lord. This hope is also something God has for His people today. Remember what God has done in your story to spur a rededication of your story to Him. Dwell on the ways He has come through for you and how He has brought the right people into your story when you needed them. Let the remembrance stir in you a new passion for your pursuit of Jesus today. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2098

Chapter 7

Put no trust in a neighbor; have no confidence in a friend; guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your arms; for the son treats the father with contempt, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house. But as for me, I will look to the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me. (v.5-7) I wouldn’t take this passage as one that advises you to disconnect from the people around you, breaking the ties of trust and support that you’ve created. Allow this passage to be a helpful encouragement that shows you where you can place your trust even when those other relationships fall short. God is all about us creating strong relationships with people, but fact is, no relationship within our lives will ever be able to support us completely and never fail us except for the relationship we find with our Heavenly Father. Friends will fail us, family will too, but our God never will. So while building trust and love within these other relationships is strongly encouraged by God, be sure the one you’re pouring the most time into and relying on the most is the relationship you have with God. Having this order of your relationships will actually grow all the other ones as well. When we don’t expect our spouse, parents, kids, etc. to be our everything, we give them room to make mistakes without us, and our relationship with them, crumbling. Pour into every relationship, just be sure the one you’re giving the most to is the one that has given the most to you. – Daily DEVO 71

He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. Micah 7:19 – We see a side of God here that I believe many of us need to see. That God isn’t a God who wants to punish us. Yes, God is much more serious about sin than we are and will be just in the handling of sin, but His heart is compassion and forgiveness. Remember Hell was never meant for people and sin was never meant to be a part of life. God’s desire is peace, love, and togetherness with Him and that’s what He sent Jesus to restore. God’s isn’t going to just be cool with you as a follower of His continuing in sin and He will take hold of your attention in ways that may seem unpleasant. Always remember though it’s not because God delights in seeing you punished, it’s because He’s knows what sin brings and wants you as far away from that as possible. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 668

I will bear the indignation of the Lord because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my cause and executes judgment for me. He will bring me out to the light; I shall look upon his vindication. Micah 7:9 – As with the other minor prophets, Micah has the task of bringing to light the wrongs of God’s people and helping them see their deep need for repentance. What’s happening within this verse though is Micah is including himself in this need for repentance. He understands he too has sinned and he too will have his wrong brought out into the light. As we seek to preach the message of salvation and repentance to a lost world, remember repentance is still something that must be taking place in our story to. When we sin God is still looking from us a turning away from that sin and a turning back to Him. Yes, be preaching this message to others but be also preaching it to yourself. The sin in our story is something to be repented from and it will be brought into the light if we don’t bring to Jesus.  I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2099
