- And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.” Luke 7:6 – In our chapter we have a story of a Roman centurion with a servant who was dying and calls upon Jesus to heal. Seeing himself as unworthy of Jesus’ presence in his house, the Roman sends others to Jesus who was on His way to stop Jesus. The Roman knew that Jesus could just say the word from far off and the servant would be healed, a measure of faith that even Jesus marveled at. Here we have a Roman who was highly respected by Jewish leaders, did kind work for those who couldn’t repay, and even had a faith that Jesus marveled at…yet see how he viewed himself. Unworthy. Unworthy of Jesus even coming into his house. This is the sort of humility that God is seeking out from His followers. Not someone who sees their social standing as reasoning for their special treatment in the church. Not someone who sees their long list of good deeds making it so Jesus is obligated to meet their needs. A believer ought to understand they are never worthy on their own of Jesus. No action we take or devotion we give can make us worthy to be given Jesus. He is too wonderful and we are too unworthy. When we remember, like the Roman did, that we don’t deserve Jesus, it makes His presence and work in our lives all the more precious. How amazing is it that we have a God who sees our sin, knows how unworthy we are in ourselves, yet still chooses to count us worthy enough to die for. What a wonderful God we serve! - One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table. Luke 7:36 – Jesus comes when invited. Maybe it’s to a centurion’s home, maybe even a Pharisee’s house, or maybe it’s even into your story. What we are seeing about Jesus is He isn’t above coming and sitting with anyone who is willing to invite Him in and listen to Him. He comes in, dwells with, and loves those He is with. Let the characters in these chapters that Jesus is hanging out with remind you that your life isn’t too messy for Jesus to step into. - “To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, “‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’” Luke 7:31-32 – The image here is a group of children shouting to another group of children. The simple message of the first group is “Come play and sing with us.” The response though of the second? Never coming over to the first group. This was to represent the message of John and Jesus when it came to the religious leaders of the day. John and Jesus were proclaiming God’s message and the religious leaders refused to “play and sing.” Today as I write this devotional, it is Easter and I can look out my office windows and the sun still hasn’t even risen yet this morning. I know that today all around the world will be messages given of “come and sing with us.” The message of dropping your old ways of life and coming into the new life of following Jesus. This is the heart of what I’m going to be preaching on today. My prayer then is that you come when called. However Jesus is calling you today, come. If it’s to drop some sin, if it’s to start a relationship with Him, if it’s to step into ministry, come to Jesus. For today Jesus is calling you to come. Our Jesus is risen from the dead and He is now calling you to follow Him. However then the Lord is calling you, lean into that call with Him for He is worthy of our following.
