Leviticus – Chapter 4

  • But the skin of the bull and all its flesh, with its head, its legs, its entrails, and its dung— 12 all the rest of the bull—he shall carry outside the camp to a clean place, to the ash heap, and shall burn it up on a fire of wood. On the ash heap it shall be burned up. Leviticus 4:11-12 – In chapter 4 we are seeing how the Lord was directing His people to handle the “unintentional” sins that were discovered among them. The idea was that the individual or congregation was seeking to live a holy lifestyle, yet in the process of such they discovered there was a sin they were committing they didn’t know about. In the first block of verses we see what a priest was supposed to do when he discovered he was sinning like this. He was to take a grown bull and completely burn it up. And while parts of it would be burned on the altar at the tent of meeting, the majority of it would be carried out to a place of refuse outside the camp and burned up there. All the valuable leather that could have been made from the animal skin and all the meat that could had been eaten, just burned up in an ash heap far outside the camp. The image God was wanting them to see was the high cost of their sin and the pointlessness of it. Because of their sin they were “wasting” a full bull like this that could have been used for so many other purposes. While it’s a crazy way to think, such is what we are doing with Jesus’ sacrifice as we continue to sin…we waste it. Jesus was and is the perfect sacrifice for our sin, and while we’d never consider what Jesus did for us a waste, when we continue to allow sin in our life we are handling His sacrifice like this bull. We are taking something extremely valuable, taking it to a place of refuse, and destroying it. Jesus’ sacrifice is far too valuable to be treated like something wasteful. • Leviticus 4 Daily DEVO When a leader sins, doing unintentionally any one of all the things that by the commandments of the Lord his God ought not to be done, and realizes his guilt…Leviticus 4:22 – Whether you are a leader or you follow one we all must remember leaders make mistakes. They aren’t perfect because they are human like everyone else. They have emotions they are learning to handle and have struggles in life they are trying to work through like everyone else. In the middle of everything a leader is handling, they very well may make a mistake and we need to be willing to forgive them for that. If God here is willing to forgive a leader we should be as well. So have you been hurt by a leader and they realized the wrong they did and have sought reconciliation? Have you allowed the chance of healing to happen or have you held that grudge still against them? While yes leaders should be held at a higher standard, they still can stumble. Let’s be the people that support our leaders and help them back up when that stumble happens rather than kicking them when they’re down. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 886
  • Thus shall he do with the bull. As he did with the bull of the sin offering, so shall he do with this. And the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven. Leviticus 4:20 – Forgiveness was able to be found. Let’s make sure we don’t overlook this amazing truth in the passage. As we navigate through not only this chapter but this whole book of Leviticus we are getting blasted with things that are so far from our normal in today’s culture and church life. We aren’t sacrificing goats, we aren’t burning the fat of the entrails, and we aren’t sprinkling the blood of bulls anywhere. Yet at the center of all this we see God was making a clear path for His people to come and find forgiveness of their sin. God’s heart has always been for His people to be able to come to Him and find forgiveness of whatever wrongs they had done. At one time it was with the blood of bulls, now it’s through the blood of Jesus. Know your story can have forgiveness weaved in it. You don’t have to carry the weight of shame or guilt any longer. Every wrong can be forgiven. Come to Jesus, ask for His forgiveness, and finally walk free from what you’ve been carrying for so long. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1927
