Leviticus – Chapter 1

  • The Lord called Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting, saying…Leviticus 1:1 – As we begin our study of the book of Leviticus we see the Lord speaking to Moses about the laws surrounding the burnt offerings. These would be the offerings that would be totally consumed on the altar as a means of atonement for the people’s sin. What we see outlined in this chapter is that God was very particular in the instructions He gave the people over how to make these burnt offerings. Only certain animals would do, and they had to be male, had to be unblemished, and had to be from their own flock showing that it must cost them something. God then outlines where they must take the offering, who was to kill it, and all the steps after the animal was dead of what must take place for the sacrifice to be acceptable to God. What this demonstrates to us is that God wasn’t giving the people freedom of choice here on how to handle the atonement process of their sins. If they wanted their sins covered, they had to do it God’s way. In our story God handles the removal of our sin the same way. We don’t get the freedom of choice on how our sin gets removed from our life. We don’t get to choose that good works will take care of our sin or that going to church enough will cover our wrongs. As with the Israelites God has outlined clearly for us the only way to have our sins removed from our life and that’s trusting in the sacrifice of Jesus. The only acceptable sacrifice for our sin is Jesus. So yes, that means we don’t get the choice on how we want to handle our sin, but praise the Lord that God has given us a means to have our sins completely done away with. • Leviticus 1 Daily DEVO But its entrails and its legs he shall wash with water. And the priest shall burn all of it on the altar, as a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord. Leviticus 1:9 – I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous stepping into Leviticus for our daily devotions! But as we went through the end of Exodus we saw there was some richness to what was there and I know that will be the same here so for the next month let’s journey together and see what we can learn. Like this verse, we see God commanding that the insides be taken out cleaned and wholly given over to God for purification. That is exactly the way God wants our lives to be given to Him. Not just the outside cleaned and given over so it appears clean, but the insides as well so the full purification can be found. So what hidden thing in your life still needs to come out so God can cleanse that part of your life as well? I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 883
  • Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When any one of you brings an offering to the Lord, you shall bring your offering of livestock from the herd or from the flock. Leviticus 1:2 – When, not if. In order for them to have a right relationship with God it wasn’t “if” you decided to bring an offering, it was when. There was going to be no atonement made without a sacrificial offering made by them. If they wanted to be right with God the debate was done, they were bringing an offering to Him. Today it’s no different. If we want to be right with God and find atonement for our sins a sacrifice must be brought. Now don’t freak out thinking this morning as you get ready for church that you’ve forgotten to pick up a bull to bring for a sacrifice. Your much needed sacrifice has already been brought, already been prepared, and already been given. Your sacrifice that made you right with God was Jesus. Today walk in confidence toward your Heavenly Father knowing the most pure of sacrifices has already been given on your behalf and it has cleansed you of every wrong. You have been made holy because of Jesus. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac Daily DEVO 1924
