John – Chapter 14

  • If you love me, you will keep my commandments. John 14:15 – Sometimes scripture doesn’t take much digging or studying to fully grasp what God is wanting us to hear from His Word. This is one of those times. If we love Jesus, we’ll follow what He tells us to do. Simple as that. Now while the message is simple to understand, the execution isn’t as simple. Always following Jesus’ commands isn’t easy, but it is our way to show Jesus back we do love Him. He showed us how deeply He loves us by what He did on the cross, now we get the opportunity to show Him how much we love Him. Today then make it overly clear to God that you love Him by how you follow His commands. Let this change the reason behind why you do what you do for God. It’s not about doing it because you have to, but because every time you say yes to God’s lead you are also telling Him you love Him. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1406
  • Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by the Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him. John 14:21 – In this chapter, Jesus is speaking some important truths to His close disciples to ready them for His departure from this world. He tells them the key to how we can demonstrate to God how much we love Him. What is the key? Keeping the commands that He has given us. What we see being promised here is that as we faithfully follow what God has established in His word to do, we will find ourselves experiencing the love of God and seeing more clearly His presence with us. Note that nowhere is this saying that our good following of the commands earns us God’s love and salvation, but our faithfulness to God’s commands after we’ve received the Lord is our way of demonstrating our love for God. Jesus then promises here that when we show our love to the Lord, we see more clearly the love that God has for us and even more clearly see Him. Let not a passage like this fuel the legalistic side of our faith where we begin this hardcore following of the rules of scripture to earn something or because of a “have to” attitude. That’s not what God is teaching here. Yes, follow His commands fully, but for the purpose of showing God your love for Him. Our life with God is about us experiencing God’s love and God receiving our love. Through Jesus we have received God’s love, and through Jesus we have learned how to show God our love.
