Jeremiah – Chapter 5

  • Then I said, “These are only the poor; they have no sense; for they do not know the way of the Lord, the justice of their God. I will go to the great and will speak to them, for they know the way of the Lord, the justice of their God.” But they all alike had broken the yoke; they had burst the bonds. Jeremiah 5:4-5 – God’s judgement on Israel’s sin was coming, and in his prophecy, Jeremiah was speaking as if he was searching the streets for someone who hadn’t turned away from God. Even just one person who had chosen to remain faithful. He looks to the poor, meaning the ones who hadn’t been taught scripture yet, and unsurprisingly finds none among them following. But the great, the ones who have been taught all the scriptures, surely he’d find someone among them following the Lord. Sadly though none there were found either. What we see is that it’s not always just the lack of knowledge of God that causes people to turn away from God. Some have a wealth of knowledge the Lord yet still turn far from Him. The real issue is how much of a love of the world is within them. When the love of the world has grown within a person, this is when we see the straying away from the Lord take place. A love of the world and a love of the Lord can’t remain within the same person. One will always win over the other. Which one then is finding victory within your life? While there may be a vast history of church in your story, and you’ve heard all the sermons, the love of the world can still be what is leading you away from a devoted life to the Lord. Reaffirm with the Lord today that it is your love for Him that is what is leading you, not a love for the world like we see in our chapter. • But even in those days, declares the Lord, I will not make a full end of you. Jeremiah 5:18 – Here we see God’s intention behind the destruction that’s coming. God isn’t desiring their complete annihilation otherwise He would make a full end of them. He’s wanting them to learn that their ways aren’t the right ways. He’s wanting them to see that following after anything other than Him is a useless and painful pursuit. We too must remember God isn’t about our destruction but our growth. He wants us flourish in His ways and in Him. When we walk down a path that’s not after Him, He’ll allow us to feel the consequences of that choice. For the reason though not to harm us but to teach and grow us. Remember Jesus took the punish of our sin on Him, now God is teaching us why sin is a worthless thing to live for. • An appalling and horrible thing has happened in the land: the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule at their direction; my people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes? Jeremiah 5:30-31 – We have scripture describing that in this time a horrible thing was happening. Prophets were sharing false words from God and the religious leaders at that time were taking those words and directing the people accordingly. While that’s bad, what’s worst is the people loved this setup. Even after Jeremiah made it clear that what was being taught was wrong, they kept going with it. The people then are asked at the end of our chapter, what then will you do when all this comes to an end? God was making it clear this setup wasn’t going to last, so what will they do when their false leaders are gone and their punishment was on them? Let’s today be wise enough to hear God’s correction and correct our steps accordingly. Rather than being content with falsehood being our guide, refuse anything other than the truth of scripture being your waypoint. Then, when scripture is our guide and Jesus our God, when the end comes we have nothing to fear but can rejoice because we have been faithful to our God.
