- Yet you, O Lord God, have said to me, “Buy the field for money and get witnesses”—though the city is given into the hands of the Chaldeans. Jeremiah 32:25 – Jeremiah was given a truly odd command from the Lord. While in the royal prison, God commanded Jeremiah to buy the property of his cousin. While odd in itself for a prisoner to purchase land that he wasn’t free to go see, it was even more odd because Babylon had already captured that land and was about to destroy Jerusalem. This land was worthless land, yet Jeremiah was commanded to buy it. In our verse we see the prophet asking the question any of us would be in that spot…why? Why Lord are you asking me to do something that make absolutely no sense? Likely that’s a question you too have asked in certain seasons of your life. God, why are you doing what you are doing and why are you calling me to do this thing that makes no sense to me at all? In spaces such as this let’s follow the example Jeremiah set for us. First he approaches God in the proper way, through prayer and through lifting high the Lord’s praises. Then He simply is real and askes the Lord his question. Know then if you approach the Lord with honor and praise, and humbly seek understanding over the ways He is moving in your life, that this is a holy way to handle the questions we have. In Jeremiah’s situation, the purpose of buying this land wouldn’t reveal itself till decades later when God brought His people back home. The purpose we’re seeking may to not come for a while, but that doesn’t mean we can’t approach the Lord seeking understanding. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3262
- Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds, both this sealed deed of purchase and this open deed, and put them in an earthenware vessel, that they may last for a long time. For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall again be bought in this land.’ Jeremiah 32:14-15 – Sometime what God does today doesn’t make sense to us. Like why He caused this relationship to end or why did this job not work out. In the moment it really isn’t clear why that didn’t work out. Sometimes though the reason why things don’t make sense today is because He is working on tomorrow today. He is working on your future and the plans He has for your future today and as a result the pieces that will later come together currently don’t make much sense. Just trust God sees the finished picture even when we don’t. If it’s clear God is doing the rearranging in your life today, yet it don’t make much sense why, trust it because He’s simply working out tomorrow today. - They have turned to me their back and not their face. And though I have taught them persistently, they have not listened to receive instruction. Jeremiah 32:33 – It’s important to listen to what the Lord says. I would assume the majority of those reading these devotions would agree with that statement, yet there is a deep difference between agreeing with and faithful following what the Lord says. You can agree that eating candy is something you shouldn’t do for multiple reasons…but tonight I betcha you’re still going to eat some candy (when writing this it’s Halloween). While the Lord in His holy scriptures has given us many things to more than just agree with but to follow, please do more than just agree with the fact we need to be telling people the good news of Jesus. Yes, please agree that it is a good thing to tell people the Gospel, but please do more than just agree! Go, share, teach, preach! Faithfully follow the command of God to tell everyone you can about the love and forgiveness of Jesus. For Jesus is the hope of the world and the answer the world is looking for. Let your life with God be more than just listening and agreeing with what He says. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2164
