Jeremiah – Chapter 19

  • Because the people have forsaken me and have profaned this place by making offerings in it to other gods whom neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have known; and because they have filled this place with the blood of innocents…Jeremiah 19:4 – Our chapter is another example of God using a sermon illustration to solidify His point with His people. Jeremiah was to break a clay pot in the presence of the people of Judah, and it was to represent the shattering God was to bring on them. A shattering that no one could put back together. Why? Because of the reasons above. Judah had begun to worship gods that had no history with this people. These gods never saved them from their enemies, or fed them in any wilderness, or parted any waters for them. Yet they gave all their worship to the new idols, and even went to the point of sacrificing their children to them. How hurtful this must have been to the Lord. He had done so much for His people up to this day, yet instead they choose to worship some golden idol or some stature of rock that had not, and could never, do anything for them. Let’s be sure that the God who saved us and sanctified us and provides us our daily bread is the One receiving our worship today. Not some “new god” who’s never yet done anything for us worthy of our devotion, nor could it ever do anything like that in the future. Jesus stands alone as the one worthy of our worship. Let no lesser thing that has never done anything for you be the object of your worship. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3248

  • And shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: So will I break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, so that it can never be mended. Jeremiah 19:11a – A broken vessel cannot be restored. No matter how much glue is used it can never work like it’s meant to. A new vessel though can be created from the material from the broken one. This is why God will allow us to be broken. Our pride, our selfishness, and our addiction to sin, those parts of our life must be broken and cast out so what’s left can be formed into something new and holy. This is why God is about transformation and not just mending our lives. God doesn’t want us to just be “fixed” with sin still a part of the final product, He wants a whole new creation absent of the parts that ruins us. So if God is working to rid your life of something, don’t fight Him and let Him do His work. The final result of you letting God have His way with your life will astonish you. • You shall say, “Hear the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing such disaster upon this place that the ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle.” Jeremiah 19:3 – Jeremiah was once again directed to proclaim a message to God’s people of a disaster that was to come upon them due to their unfaithfulness. What we see spoken here here by God is also who the message was for: kings and inhabitants. Rulers and those ruled, all were to hear God’s word and submit to God’s authority. No one was excluded from needing to hear what God had to say and from following His words. That truth remains the same today. Parent and child, boss and employee, teacher and student, pastor and church goer, all are to hear the words of the Lord and to follow them. No titles excluded. Know then whatever titles are carried by you only reinforce the importance of your need to listen and follow God’s word. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2151
