- Thus shall you say to them: “The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens.” Jeremiah 10:11 – Today’s chapter is all about highlighting the vast differences between the Lord and the worthless idols Judah was creating. The prophet spoke of idols as useless, speechless hunks of wood. That people would go out into the forest, cut down a tree, carve it to look pretty, put shiny things in it, and then declare it as the god they worship. How ridiculous is that! About such “gods” the Lord speaks and says our verse above. These gods whose hands didn’t make the heavens and whose voice didn’t speak the earth, will die and fade away from the very heaven and earth they didn’t make. Their wood idols would rot. Their stone idols would erode. Their gold idols would be melted. Their idols would come to nothing and the idols themselves could do nothing about it for there was no life in them. Yet, the people remained to place all their worship and hope in these things over the living God. Let’s be careful that we aren’t placing our hope in things that will fade from heaven and earth someday. Someday your job will be no more. Someday your money will be spent or given to someone else. Someday that person will no longer be here. While these sorts of things are places many in our world choose to place their hope in, they are as temporary and useless in the long run as a wooden idol. You don’t have to place your hope in something that has an expiration date, our eternal Savior named Jesus is here and can be the source of all your hope in life. - But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. Jeremiah 10:10a – I’m going to let scripture lead today’s devo. Compare today’s passage to these other verses in this chapter and ask yourself what type of God do you serve? … “for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.” Jeremiah 10:3-5 I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 929
- Every man is stupid and without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, for his images are false, and there is no breath in them. They are worthless, a work of delusion; at the time of their punishment they shall perish. Not like these is he who is the portion of Jacob, for he is the one who formed all things, and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance; the Lord of hosts is his name. Jeremiah 10:14-16 – “Not like these is he…” I love this phrase we see come up in our passage. In it we see the heart of the chapter and Jeremiah’s message to the people. Idols, the worthless, man-made creations that have no life in them, can offer no good to those who worship them, that have no voice in them to speak….not like these is He. God is not like these idols who can’t speak into our story and can’t move to rescue us. Idols will let you down, break commitments, refuse to show up, and leave you to rescue yourself in times of distress. Not like these is He whose name is Jesus. If you have been feeling the neglect that is attached to having something other than God as what your life is about, know today Jesus isn’t like that thing. He will show up and He will support. He has life within Him and has the power to change things. Choose Jesus over anything else for anything else isn’t like Him. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2142
