Isaiah – Chapter 57

  • I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will lead him and restore comfort to him and his mourners… Isaiah 57:18 – God sees our ways, yet even still has chosen that path of helping us come to Him. What sort of crazy amount of love does someone have to have for someone to see all the wrong they’ve done, seen how this other person has completely rejected them, yet still pursues this other person to show love to them. That’s God in our story. In our passage we see God being aware of all these things His people did and said, just like it is with us. Yet He remained constant in His efforts of helping them to see His love. Know that God has seen everything about you, and I mean everything. Yet, even with all that on the table, He still wants you. Let’s accept that truth about His love for us and freely turn to Him, mistakes and all. Have confidence you won’t be turned away by Him. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1258
  • Behind the door and the doorpost you have set up your memorial, for, deserting me, you have uncovered your bed, you have gone up to it, you have made it wide; and you have made a covenant for yourself with them, you have loved their bed, you have looked on nakedness. Isaiah 57:8 – The Lord is speaking to His people about their passions for the idols in their life. God relates their worship of idols to an adulterous spouse with a fiery lust for their secret lover. Their adultery had grown so much that it was no longer a secret, but they “uncovered” their bed and made it wide, meaning their adultery was known and seen by all. They would walk into the home of their false lover, close the door behind them, and commit the sins of abandoning their God. Note though how this verse begins, “Behind the door and the doorpost.” Why that’s a unique thing for God to say is for what would have been inscribed on their doorpost. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 says they are to keep in mind, teach their children, … and write on their doorposts this: “The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” What God was seeking to do with His people was to have them remember their commitment to Him always. So when they went through the door to commit sin with their adulterous lover, they would have to pass by the inscription that God alone is God and that they love Him, then close the door to all that. When we sin, this is exactly what we are doing as well. We say God alone is our God and we love Him, yet when we chose sin we are “walking by our doorpost,” closing the door to God, and choosing sin over Him. Let us live for our God better than this. Choose to follow after Jesus today and let go of the sin of yesterday. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2724
