- Genesis 5 Daily DEVO Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him. Genesis 5:24 – I heard a pastor once say in reference to this passage that Enoch lived differently than the rest of the world that God took him out of the world in a way different than the rest of the world. While reading through these names and seeing their lifespans, it’s crazy to imagine people’s lives lasting that long. Yet in the middle, this guy Enoch, lived only 365 years and then God took him. While for us 365 years is not a short lifespan at all, to them it probably was. So whatever amount of years God blesses us with, whether many or few, let’s walk with God each day like we have no tomorrow. God may give you 969 years like Methuselah or today may be your last. Either way know you’re in God’s hands with should give you the courage and freedom to live fully for Him today. Let it be said of you that you lived so fully for God in this world that your impact was different than anyone else’s. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 486
- Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created. Genesis 5:2 – Adam was given permission to name all the animals of the earth and Adam was given dominion over them. There was one creation though that God Himself named. Man. For God is the one with dominion over man. God is the one who designed, created, and breathed life into man. As a result He is the one to set up the foundations of our existence. He chooses the right way to live for mankind for He is the creator. Man is not the owner of man, God owns mankind. What this means for us is that whatever God has spoken trumps what we have spoken. His ways trumps our ways. His plan for man trumps our own. He is Lord of all. How then have you in your own story made yourself lord of your life? Where have you chosen your ways of how you want to live your life over how God says to live? If God is your Lord, make sure His ways trumps all others in your story. - Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died. Genesis 5:31 – Here in our chapter we read about the family line from Adam to Noah. Quickly we see some shocking ages these men lived. Adam lived 930 years, Seth lived 912 years, and Enoch who didn’t die but went to be with the Lord lived the shortest of 365 years. Now there are many theories of why they had such long lives, but they truly are just that, theories. Feel free to study those on your own, for today I want to focus on something else other than long lifespans each of the men had in common. Each died (except for the unique case of Enoch). Yes they came from a special family line, yes they lived centuries, and yes they have many sons and daughters, but at the end of their life they all died. Due to the curse on our world of sin, death is now a part of each person’s story. Are you ready? Who knows, maybe God will allow you to live to be 969 years old like He did with Methuselah, but even after all those years the question remains the same. Are you ready for what’s to come after you die? Are you sure you’re going to Heaven, and if so, how are you sure? If your answer is anything but “Because Jesus saved me,” then you need to do some deep examining of your story for you’re not ready to die. Thankfully Jesus is here, ready to save you, and He has already gone ahead of us to prepare a place for us with Him in Heaven. Embrace the life He gives and then make sure those around you have embraced it too. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2811
