Genesis – Chapter 49

  • Genesis 49 Daily DEVO The archers bitterly attacked him, shot at him, and harassed him severely, yet his bow remained unmoved; his arms were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel) Genesis 49:23-24 – What I love about this passage is how it gives God all the credit for his steadfastness. We see him being attacked relentlessly yet him being able to stand firm and not be moved by the many attacks coming his way. But how? By God keeping him strong. That goes for you as well. In life we are going to be pressed down and attacked. We’re going to face difficulties all throughout our story. Yet what will keep us standing and still moving forward in life? The help from God in our life. God is the one who can help you through and He’s ready and willing to bless you with that support. Know if you’re trusting in Him, you will prevail through your struggle. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 529
  • Assemble and listen, O sons of Jacob, listen to Israel your father. Genesis 49:2 – Here Jacob is bringing close all twelve of his sons in his finals moments of life to speak to them and bless this accordingly. What we see as we read through the rest of the chapter is some of the sons receive solid, praiseworthy blessings. Others though receive what could be taken as curses, condemning their deeds done in life. What this reminds us is that when we approach God to listen to Him, we must be willing to listen to all He has to say. Listening means hearing and accepting the blessing when it comes but it also means listening and accepting the charges against our sinfulness as well. We need to hear all that God has to say to us, not just the words that are easy to swallow. How then have you been coming close and listening to what your Heavenly Father is saying to you? While yes there was blessings and charges against sin handed out for Jacob’s sons, it all began with them taking time to come close to their father. • …yet his bow remained unmoved; his arms were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (from there is the Shepherd,  the Stone of Israel), by the God of your father who will help you, by the Almightywho will bless you with blessings of heaven above…Genesis 49:24-25a – Jacob gathered his twelve sons around him and began to speak over them. Some of what he said was blessing, some of it felt more like a curse upon their sinful actions, but what is seen within the words to Joseph highlights a beautiful aspect of Jacob’s life. Jacob finally claimed God as His own. Often before in scripture we see Jacob refer to God as “the God of Abraham” or “The Fear of Isaac.” Yet in his dying words, the tone shifts, and we see him claim God as the Mighty One of Jacob, his Shepherd and Stone, and his own Almighty God. I believe how we speak about God does much to tell others how we view and relate with God. Would those around you be able to say that God is your God by the way you speak? Would people at your work be able to know that God is the Shepherd of your life because you make it clear He is the One you follow? Would those in your family know that God is the ultimate voice you listen to? What would those around you say about your relationship with God by how you talk about and refer to God? If God is your Father, Shepherd, Stone, and Almighty God, make that clear within your life to all those that are in your life. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2855
