Genesis – Chapter 36

  • Genesis 36 Daily DEVO Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the members of his household, his livestock, all his beasts, and all his property that he had acquired in the land of Canaan. He went into a land away from his brother Jacob. For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together. The land of their sojourning could not support them because of their livestock. Genesis 36:6-7 – As difficult as it was to get through all those names in this chapter, we have to remember what each one of those names represent. Each person listed off is a promise from God being answered. God promised Abraham that his descendants would be an uncountable number. What we are seeing as we read, or try to read through at least, these names are reminders that God keeps His Word. So for you as you read these names, be reminded that each name represents God’s ability and sureness to keep His Word to you as well. Just like He didn’t go back on what He said to Abraham, He’s not going back on what He promised to you either. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 516
  • These are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah; he is the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness, as he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father. Genesis 36:24 – Even after looking into some commentaries on this passage, the significance of this isn’t much. He found a new source of water, and that’s what he is known in all of history for. What are you going to be known for? What is it that people when they think of you immediately affiliate with you? “Oh he’s the guy that got that crazy touchdown back in junior year” or “She’s the lady with that massive house on the hill” or “He has like 10k Instagram followers.” At the end of the day, those are cool, but if you had one phrase that your life could be summed up into would that really be what you want to be known for all history for? If not, then why give those things such importance today in striving after or keeping? My hope is that at the end of my story people say of me something like, “Man he loved Jesus and wanted everyone to know about Jesus.” Because a touchdown and a lot of followers on social media is cool, even finding a random hot spring is cool, but making sure people know about Jesus is eternal. • These are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir. Genesis 36:9 – While we have been focusing on Jacob for the past few chapters, we can’t forget that Jacob had a twin brother named Esau. From even before the two were born, God established that Jacob, the younger brother, would receive the covenant promise that He first gave to Abraham and Isaac. That Jacob would have the blessing of nations and kings coming from him, that his descendants would outnumbers the starts in the sky, and that eventually that the land of the Canaanites would be given to him. Truly Jacob received the better end of the blessing, and Esau at one point was distraught about this thinking that he would have nothing. Yet look at this chapter of someone who “didn’t get” God’s covenant blessing. So many children, so many grandchildren, kings and chiefs came from his line; such were the blessings Esau. If God still so richly blessed Esau, despite Isaac receiving the covenant blessing, can you image how blessed Isaac is going to be who has the promise of God on Him? Making this practical, we see today all around us people who are not followers of Jesus, but still receiving blessing from the Lord. They have air to breath, sunshine in the day, cool in the night, and worldly blessings and wonders still come, even to those who aren’t followers of Jesus because our God is a good God. Yet, if such blessings come to those who don’t have the promises of God given to them as followers of Jesus, can you image how much greater such blessings will be for those who do have the promise? If you then are a follower of Jesus, know you blessed with the promises from God we see in scripture, and He has never failed in keeping His word to His people. The blessings the lost world gets to partake in is only a shadow of what those who follow Jesus receive. Praise the Lord we have a God who brings blessing to those who follow Him.
