Genesis – Chapter 19

  • Genesis 19 Daily DEVO And they struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house, both small and great, so that they wore themselves out groping for the door. Genesis 19:11 – The situation these men found themselves in is such a picture of the situation those who follow after sin find themselves in. Blind and can’t find what they are looking for. Please know that scripture is not oblivious to the temptations that sin brings and the lies it gives out. Even Jesus was tempted in every way we learn from scripture. That said, learn from scripture where sin takes you. These men who were consumed with their sinful desires found themselves blinded. Like sin does, they found themselves exhausted seeking after the “prize” sin told them they would have, but never found it. And finally we’re destroyed due to their love of sin. Remember what Jesus said, the thief only wants to steal, kill, and destroy. Sin hurts you. Learn this lesson from scripture so you don’t have to fall into the same pits we see those falling into from our passages. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 499
  • But he lingered. So the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city. Genesis 19:16 – Other translations say he hesitated or he was dragging his feet. He lingered. Lot knew full well what was about to happen to Sodom and Gomorrah. He knew the level of sin there and God had made it clear what was about to happen. Despite all that, Lot lingered. As with Lot, God has made it clear how He is dealing with the sin in our world. Those that don’t seek forgiveness and allow Jesus to bear the burden of their sin for them will have to suffer the consequences of choosing to take care of sin on their own. A death of eternal separation from God. You knows what’s coming, don’t hesitate to turn to follow Jesus. Already a follower? Then scripture also depicts clearly what can take place when a follower is consumed with sinfulness. No one turns to Jesus because of you. Don’t linger. Don’t choose sin over God. Be the salt of the earth rather than your life just adding salt to the earth. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1823
  •  So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, “Up! Get out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city.” But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting. Genesis 19:14 – Lot, while remaining a follower of God himself, is a perfect example of what comprising to accept the world’s belief of sin can have on our witness. Lot went from just going in the direction of Sodom and pitching his tent near it, to sitting at the gate as a leader of the city. Lot continued to comprise by accepting the sinful behavior of those around him and dwelling where sin was flagrant. In our verse above, we see what such acceptance of sin can do to our witness. Lot, knowing the coming judgement of the Lord, tries to warn his sons-in-law to run away from this sinful place to where the Lord is leading, yet they think he’s just joking. He had lost all influence and any witness of righteousness to others was gone. Be wise then how you handle sin. Don’t accept sin as ok to have around and dwell in like the world accepts sin. Be willing to stand firm in what you know scripture says is holy and what is sinful. For when we begin to treat things we know are sinful as acceptable, that comprise of our beliefs will destroy any chance of sharing the Gospel with people. While no one enjoys having their way of life identified as wrong, if their way of life is scripturally sinful, it is a wrong way of life that is leading them towards death. The “loving” thing to do is not to allow them to live as they want, but to share with them the truth around their way of life. Yet, with how you handle sin right now, do you think anyone would even listen to you sharing the Gospel? I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2825
