Genesis – Chapter 11

  • Genesis 11 Daily DEVO And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech. Genesis 11:6-7 – God didn’t disrupt their lives pointlessly. God was seeing how far this self-willed, rebellious to God life was beginning to take them. Yes it was possibly going to take them to fame in the world, but also deep without in the kingdom of God. So God stepped in and changed their path so they wouldn’t continue to walk away from Him. So will God do in our story. God knows what it looks like when His people begin to walk away from Him (remember we just got through reading about the flood). He also knows how much pain sin brings into their story. So in His love He will intervene in our story to help us not fall deeper into hurtful sin. That intervention may though be Him disrupting the very path we dreamed all our lives of going down. If that happens, trust God knows what He’s doing. Don’t react in hatred of Him for not letting you have your way. If our Heavenly Father chose to step in and disrupt your story like that it wasn’t just for His enjoyment of seeing your struggle. It was because that was the best and most loving thing He could do for you and you future (something you can’t see but He can). Remember, trust God knows what He is doing. • Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” Genesis 11:4 – As simple of a statement as this may seem, their plans went in complete opposition to God’s command. In chapter 9 verse 1 God gives the clear command to fill the earth. To not remain in one place, but to spread out and fill His creation. Their plans goes against God’s plan as if God said go right and they went left. How then are you “going left” as God is telling you to go right? What is it that God has been telling you to do but possibly you’ve been doing anything but that? Maybe talking with a friend about Jesus? Maybe leaving that relationship? Maybe joining a church? Yes, sometimes it can be fuzzy on exactly what God wants from us. Yet while we may pretend He is, God isn’t always fuzzy with His commands. Sometimes they are overly clear yet we decide to look away. What then are we looking away from? How can you today be more in line with God’s plan for you? If God says turn right…turn right. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1815

  • Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife, and they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan, but when they came to Haran, they settled there. Genesis 11:31 – In chapter 11 we are introduced to likely one of the most famous individuals in all of history, Abraham. From Joshua 24:2, we learn that he comes from a family of idol worshippers, and in Acts 7:2-4 we see the Lord gave a command to Abram to leave his homeland of Ur to travel wherever God leads them to. They pack up in faithfulness to the command, towards the land of Canaan, approximately a 1200 miles journey. We see though that as they were traveling, they came to Haran and settled there instead, about 400 miles short of Canaan. While leaving their sinful past behind in Ur was good, partial obedience to a command of the Lord isn’t. Yes, they left when God told them too, and likely left behind much of their idol worshipping, but God told them to stop when He showed them where to stop, not wherever they chose to settle. How often is this the case for our walk with the Lord? We move when He calls us to, but when the journey is long and the end isn’t clear, we settle miles short of where we know God is leading. Know the path of faithfulness to the Lord is usually long and usually unclear of it’s end destination. It will also be filled with places you can choose to stop and settle at, forgoing the rest of the journey for your comfort. Just know you will not find blessing in the place of partial obedience. Even for Abraham, it wasn’t until he finally arrived where God told him to go that he received his blessing. Wherever then God is leading you, complete the journey in its fullness and taste the blessing the comes with complete faithfulness to the Lord.
