- So I spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died. And on the next morning I did as I was commanded. Ezekiel 24:18 – Talk about faithfulness to the mission. Ezekiel’s wife passes yet the next morning he gets up and does all that God commanded him to do. As all of you already know life, especially life following Jesus, isn’t easy. Just because we choose to follow God doesn’t mean our story will be free of pain and loss. How then can we keep going forward with the mission in the midst of this struggle? We can keep going when life isn’t good because we know God is good. Life is full of pain because of sin, but God is here giving us a path to find peace in the middle of this pain. Don’t allow the struggle to stifle your pursuit of God, He’s the only thing that can help us make sense of the struggle we are in and offer peace as well. - Thus shall Ezekiel be to you a sign; according to all that he has done you shall do. When this comes, then you will know that I am the Lord God.’ Ezekiel 24:24 – In the midst of the proclaiming God’s judgement, the Lord shared with Ezekiel that his wife was going to pass. The Lord then gave Ezekiel strict directions on how to handle his grieving differently than the norm would be for someone in that day. When word got around that Ezekiel’s wife had passed, the people were shocked at how Ezekiel was acting for he wasn’t behaving as someone who had just lost a loved one. We see God was using all this, and Ezekiel himself, as a sign to the people. A sign of what God was going to do and a sign of how they would behave afterwards. What we see take place in the chapter is something we as followers of God should remember. That God will use us and our lives as “signs.” God is about His glory and the world coming to know His message of salvation. He then will use the lives of His followers for those goals. While the end result is always beautiful, this does mean God will use us in ways sometimes that are not comfortable or desirable. When God then calls us to difficult seasons or gives us difficult directions, let’s seek to remain faithful to Him the whole time. For people will see us and they will see how we live in those times, and if we can be a sign to God’s goodness, protection, and provision, let’s do so.
