Exodus – Chapter 4

  • “If they will not believe you,” God said, “or listen to the first sign, they may believe the latter sign. If they will not believe even these two signs or listen to your voice, you shall take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground, and the water that you shall take from the Nile will become blood on the dry ground.” Exodus 4:8-9 – Moses had been called by God to do the wonderful work of being the Lord’s tool to save Israel from captivity. Now, to make sure all acknowledged the truth that God was with Moses, the Lord gave Moses three signs. First, his staff would become a snake, then once Moses picked it up it would return to a staff. Second, his clean hand would enter his pocket and come out covered in leprosy, then after returning it to the pocket it would come out clean again. Finally, we see the third sign with the water and blood in our verse above. The first sign would show all that God could make all the enemies of His people powerless. The second sign would show all that God could make all things unclean pure once again. Yet the third sign would be a sign of judgement, for note the water turned to blood never turned back to water. That if they rejected the Lord’s power and cleaning, they would find themselves in a place under God’s punishment. Whether it’s with these multiple signs, or even God’s patience with Moses’ multiple questions, we see how God’s heart is not our immediate demise. God isn’t looking for any opportunity to punish us, He’s about saving us. He though isn’t going to force us to embrace His saving. He’ll reveal Himself, He’ll invite us to Himself, He’ll even come to earth and die for us. Yet after all the invitations and signs if we still choose to reject, the result will be like the third sign, judgement with no turning back. Don’t allow that to be your story. • Exodus 4 Daily DEVO But Moses said to the Lord, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.” Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.” Exodus 4:10-12 – What you have or don’t have can’t be your excuse to not follow what God tells you to do. What we see happening with Moses is when our weaknesses and to us the very thing we think would hold us back from following God is trusted with God, it can become an enormous strength. It may even be the tool God uses to set someone free. So what would be your thing that you see as your weakness? I challenge you to begin daily handing that up to God saying you trust Him with it. God just might surprise you and not only change the way you see that thing but change people’s life through you because of it. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 798
  • At a lodging place on the way the Lord met him and sought to put him to death. Exodus 4:24 – While it doesn’t specify exactly who the Lord sought to kill here, later verses point it out to be Moses. But why? Why after commissioning Moses to be the one to rescue His people would God do this? What we see in later verses  is apparently Moses, for whatever reason, had not circumcised his son like God commanded of His people. God could not allow the one who was to represent Him to live in disobedience to Him. While drastic measures were taken, keep in mind if God wanted to kill Moses without giving him a chance to repent God could have, but God gave Moses a chance to change his ways. What we must learn from this passage is God is serious about the way His followers live. Christians, the followers of Jesus, the people on earth representing the person of Jesus to the world, must live in the way that God directs. How we choose to live tells the world that doesn’t know God what God is good with and what’s acceptable in a relationship with Him. If then through our life we teach people that God is okay with sin in our story, know we are living in a very dishonorable way towards God. Examine then your life. If someone who doesn’t know Jesus looked closely at your life and based their understanding of a Christian life by your life, would they have an accurate example of how God desires for us to live? God’s giving us a chance to change our ways today…take it. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1887
