Exodus – Chapter 39

  • They made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and wrote on it an inscription, like the engraving of a signet, “Holy to the Lord.” 31 And they tied to it a cord of blue to fasten it on the turban above, as the Lord had commanded Moses. Exodus 39:30-31 – In our chapter we’re getting the final descriptions of the work being completed by the people of Israel in the making of all that God had commanded them to make. We see recorded in this chapter the making of the priestly garments that were to be worn by Aaron and his sons during their time of serving in the Tabernacle. The clothes were designed by the Lord and to be exactly how He commanded them to be. The piece discussed in our verse above was a golden name plate that would be worn on the hat worn by the high priest. On it said “Holy to the Lord” so that everyone, and especially himself, would know that is what he was. Set apart for the Lord. While I feel many of us would feel comfortable trying on the coats and the cool breastplate with all its jewels, how would you feel looking in a mirror seeing the label “Holy to the Lord” being on your head. Do you believe that? Do you feel your life right now isn’t being lived in such a way? Would you feel like a fake wearing such a label on yourself? 1 Peter 1 reminds us that the Lord we serve is holy and He has called us to be holy like Himself. What then would need to change within your life to where you see yourself truly set apart for the Lord? Maybe its setting aside some sinful lifestyle, maybe it’s showing more patience with people, or maybe it’s beginning to spend more of your day in His word with Him. Because of Jesus we have been made holy, but is our lives being lived out in a holy, set apart for the Lord way? Today can be the day that begins. • Exodus 39 Daily DEVO According to all that the Lord had commanded Moses, so the people of Israel had done all the work. Exodus 39:42 – “As the Lord had commanded Moses.” This phrase, or something very close to it, comes up 10 times in this chapter. Usually when something is repeated in scripture it’s meant to grab your attention so when it’s used that many times in a single chapter, let’s listen to it. He did as the Lord commanded Moses. He didn’t add to or subtract from the directions given. Either or both would end up missing the mark and hitting imperfection instead. For him to be in line with God he needed to do all that God commanded. That goes for us too. We’re made perfect because of Jesus, so don’t take this as we have to do things to be good with God. God though has a plan for us, one that’s beautiful and rich of blessing. He’s asking us to follow His lead in every way, not turning to the right or left but doing all that He directs us to do. As we add our own ways to the directions or subtract the directions we don’t like we end up missing the mark. Let’s follow God’s ways completely. Along the path that might mean giving up your suggestions to the path and doing things you’d rather not at first do. His path has been proven to be better than your own though. Let’s try something new and begin following Him completely. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 833
  • He also made the robe of the ephod woven all of blue, and the opening of the robe in it was like the opening in a garment, with a binding around the opening, so that it might not tear. Exodus 39:22-23 – “So that it might not tear.” Notice how in the creation of the robe thought was given to the fact that there could be a possibility of it tearing. That would cause a whole range of issues if that were to happen, especially if the priest was wearing the robe and performing his duties when it tore. They took time to think about how to prevent an issue before the issue came up. Let’s as a church seek to do the same for our brothers and sisters. Let’s be on the look out for ways we can prevent an issue from happening long before it ever happens. Maybe that looks like simply being sure your church has enough bibles to hand out to those who need one so you never find yourself with the issue of someone leaving your church without access to God’s Word. This could look like being aware of your brother’s sin struggle and removing from your home anything that could trip him up when he comes over. It’s you investing time now to prevent future issues. Will we be able to prevent every issue? Of course not, but there are ones if we dedicated even a little time and effort we could resolve before they even arise. What can you be doing today to prevent the enemy from having a victory in tomorrow? I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1922
