Exodus – Chapter 34

  • And he said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you. Exodus 34:10 – While hearing words like this from the Lord isn’t too odd when it comes to reading scripture, let us remember the context of what’s happening prior to this statement from the Lord. God had already established a covenant with Israel. He gave them His law, and that law was spoken over the people. The people then stepped into a covenant agreement with the Lord saying they would follow every word the Lord had commanded them. Yet not long after making that proclamation to the Lord, Israel broke that covenant by worshipping the golden calf. What though do we now see happening here in our verse? God is establishing a new covenant with Israel. Even though they broke the last one, and God had all the right to condemn and punish Israel for their sin, God relented and chose to show grace instead to Israel. When He could have let Israel stay in their state of brokenness with Him, the Lord chose instead to once again enter into a covenant with Israel. He would protect, bless, and make them great. He would do such awesome work through them that the world would be amazed at the Lord. How amazing is our God? How loving is our God? That when the very people that promised to follow Him completely rejected Him and worshipped a false god, He chose to forgive and restart things with them again. This gracious, compassionate God displayed in this chapter is also the same God we serve today. The covenant we are in with God today isn’t based on our actions, but on the sacrifice of Jesus. As God chose to stay with Israel God has chosen to stay with His followers today, despite their sin. Praise Jesus we have a God like we do! • Exodus 34 Daily DEVO When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Exodus 34:29 – Time with God changes us. That change may be a complete overhaul of our lives by His forgiveness or a change from our depression to His joy. What we need to understand is God changes us when we spend time with Him. So if you’re looking for change right now in your story begin seeking Him out rather than that elusive “change.” God brings about change in our story, yet unlike us, He always brings the right change. So wherever you’re at right now (lost, lonely, strong but need more…in a spot where you need some change) take today to seek Him out deeper in your story. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac
  • Exodus 34 Daily DEVO The Lord said to Moses, “Cut for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.” Exodus 34:1 – God was going to write exactly what was on the first tablets on the new ones. Meaning what He said first was perfect and needed no changing. Meaning there was no mistake in the Word He gave to Moses. This is true with the Word He gave to us. It is perfect and has no need for change. What’s disturbing is often our culture, and even the church culture of the day, thinks scripture needs changing. That God meant something different, that what God said isn’t applicable for today, or that God was just wrong about something and you’re more correct about it. Hear this, God’s Word is perfect and needs no changing. We must stop this taking God’s Word out of context to justify our sin. We must stop setting God’s Word aside so we can do what we want. God hasn’t made a mistake with His Word, the mistake comes when we don’t live by it. Let’s learn the true, perfect Word of God more and be ready to stand up for it when it is misused. • The Lord said to Moses, “Cut for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.” Exodus 34:1 – If Moses wanted to receive the Word of God He had to first listen to the Word God had already spoken to Him. New tablets with God’s law on them were being promised to Moses from God but if Moses wanted them he first had to listen to God directions and follow them. In our story today our walk isn’t that much different. No, we aren’t getting any new commandments like Moses did, but we are searching out God’s directions and voice in our story. What should we do next, who should we date, how do I help my wayward child? Big questions that needs God’s voice over them. God is also sharing that He has a plan in those things and seeks to share that with you. We just need to listen first to what He has spoken already. Listen to what He has said about putting Him first in our life and about how to handle the sin we are entertaining. What has He already spoken to you about that you’ve dismissed? Let’s address those things showing God we desire His voice in our story. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1917
