Exodus – Chapter 31

  • And he gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God. Exodus 31:18 – Moses had been up on the mountain with God now for 40 days and nights. God had been instructing Moses on all sorts of things from the design of the Ark of the Covenant to how the garments the priests wore were to look. These things were given to Moses with great detail so they could match their heavenly counterparts as closely as possible. Then, at the end of this 40 days, when the Lord was done speaking, God Himself wrote for Moses on these two tablets of stone. God’s very words, written with the finger of God, were given to Moses. How amazingly special is that, that Moses was able to hold within his hands the written words of God like this. Such a find would be the climax of archelogy! How many of us would love to hold within their arms these tablets of stone, for on such was written the words of the Lord? Yet at the very same time, like a popular song right now reminds us of, there is dust on our Bibles. Finding space in our day to read scripture is difficult, and finding the passion for it is even harder. Bible plans get started but never finished and we even find ourselves sometime forgetting our Bibles when we come to church. Let’s keep in mind that these copies of scripture are just as much God’s word as those tablets of stone given to Moses were. If we want to hold in our hands the words of the Lord just like Moses had the opportunity to do, then pick up your Bible. If you want to know what God has to say to you, then read your Bible. If you want to hear God speak audibly to you, then read your Bible out loud. Remember how blessed we are to have the word of our God complete and available to us like we have. • Exodus 31 Daily DEVO And behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And I have given to all able men ability, that they may make all that I have commanded you Exodus 31:6 – If you’ve been reading along with me over these past few chapters, it can seem overwhelming all that God was asking them to do. It can also be overwhelming when we think about all that God asks us to do in our life with Him. Yet God here reminds Moses that while He has asked a lot to be done, He’s already provided what Moses needed to get it done. We must remember that if God gives us directions He’ll all give us what we need to follow those directions. God is seeking faithful followers and He promises to give them what they need as they follow after Him. While it may not look like there is what you need for what you see ahead, that’s why it’s called walking by faith and not by sight. God isn’t about to let you fall as you pursue Him. Keep moving forward trusting God is going to provide the step and all you need to keep taking steps. He’s done it so far, let’s see Him do it again. • You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, “Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you.” Exodus 31:13 – Remember the sabbath and keep it holy. A command we’ve all most likely heard, a command to set aside a day of work for rest. Yes, this day is a way God has designed for us to find the replenishing rest we need to keep going, yet we see another reason in our passage for the sabbath. It’s so we can know it’s God who sanctifies us. Sanctify means to purify something, it’s the process of setting something a part because it’s holy. God wants us to remember it’s Him that makes us holy. Not our works, not our efforts, not our going hard and never stopping. See if we never rested, we may come to think it’s our own efforts that’s earning us this right standing with God. God, not wanting us to deceive ourselves, has said then for us to rest. Allow yourself time to see that when you stop all your efforts you still remain holy because it’s God who makes you such, not your works. Maybe today this is why you need a sabbath, not to just rest, but to remind you it’s God who has made you holy instead of the good works you’re doing.
