Exodus – Chapter 27

  • You shall make the court of the tabernacle. On the south side the court shall have hangings of fine twined linen a hundred cubits long for one side. Exodus 27:9 – While the tabernacle, the movable tent that was the first place of worship the Lord, was outlined for Moses, we see that God wasn’t done. Around the tabernacle was to be a large area fenced off by linen fabric and poles and this was to be the court of the tabernacle. This fence would be the marker for all of Israel of what was holy ground. In the court would be the bronze altar where the sacrifices of Israel would be made. While designated as holy ground, any Israelite was allowed to come within the fenced off area of the courts. This would be true even later on when the official temples were created, there was always this outer court area that any Israelite was allowed to enter and draw near to the Lord. Yet entering the tabernacle was off limits except to the priests, and the most holy place within the tabernacle was only accessible one day out of the year by only the high priest. Drawing near the Lord at this time was gate kept and not accessible to most. Then came Jesus. Remember one of the dramatic events that took place when Jesus breathed His last breath on the cross was the veil was torn in two. The veil of the temple, that separated man from God, was torn wide open. What does that mean for us? It means as believers in Jesus we can enter into the outer courts, but we don’t have to stop there. We can walk straight into the tabernacle, then past the veil into the most holy place, all because of Jesus. There is nothing separating us from the Lord anymore because of Jesus’ sacrifice. How wonderful is it to know that we can draw near to God in ways that the Israelites at this time could only dream of. Let’s take full advantage then of this blessing we have. • Exodus 27 Daily DEVO You shall command the people of Israel that they bring to you pure beaten olive oil for the light, that a lamp may regularly be set up to burn. Exodus 27:20 – Apparently pure beaten olive oil was the best type of oil you could have. They were to bring their best so that the light in the tent wouldn’t go out and the work could continue. I see that resembling our command to give our best to God so that work of the Gospel can continue. Let’s make it even more applicable. Let’s make sure we are giving our best to our church home so the work of the local church we are a part of can continue. Give your tithe and offering. Give your talents and time. Give your best. The work God is doing through your church is incredibly important and He’s placed you in that church family to help see to the completion of that important work. Let’s be more than just a church attender, but a member who is invested and committed to seeing God’s work accomplished. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 821

  • You shall make pots for it to receive its ashes, and shovels and basins and forks and fire pans. You shall make all its utensils of bronze. Exodus 27:3 – God is now giving directions on how to create the bronze altar, a place the people would soon be sacrificing animals on for a long time. Notice how God even in the directions of its creation includes the directions to create pots and shovels for all the ashes that would for sure come. God isn’t trying to hide the truth that their sacrificing to Him will get messy, instead He chose to provide a plan to deal with the mess. God isn’t trying to make us believe either that when we sacrifice to Him that it won’t be messy. He might ask you to let go of that dating relationship because it isn’t healthy for you. He might ask you to give up that habit that’s becoming toxic in your story. That mindset that you once protected yourself with now God is now asking you to give that up to Him. All this is messy and God gets that. This is why, just like with the Israelites, God has provided a plan to deal with that mess. One of those provisions is the church. So yes, God is asking you give up things for Him, and yes, God understands that may get messy and hard, but God has also provided a way to deal with that mess and pain.
