Exodus – Chapter 26

  • Moreover, you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen and blue and purple and scarlet yarns; you shall make them with cherubim skillfully worked into them. Exodus 26:1 – Here the Lord brings to Moses the detailed design of the Tabernacle, the original meeting place between God and man. We see God instruct in the last chapter how to create the ark and the other items inside the tabernacle. Then in this chapter we’re given the details of the tabernacle itself, from the design of the veil to the layers of the coverings. Something though I hadn’t noticed until a commentary pointed it out was the order in which the design was given. God started with the innermost piece (the ark), moved out (the other instruments in the tabernacle), then gave layer by layer from innermost to the outermost on the coverings. How God gave the details was from His vantage point in the tabernacle, inside to out, not from ours which would be from outside going in. It also reveals the way God works in the new temple of the Lord, us. He begins with perfecting the innermost part of us and works out from there. God’s knows the heart and mind of His people needs to be renewed, and once that takes place then the transformation out can begin. Praise the Lord we serve a God who isn’t about a showy outer appearance but has no beauty deep within. Instead we serve a God who perfects from the inside out. • Exodus 26 Daily DEVO And you shall make a veil of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. It shall be made with cherubim skillfully worked into it. Exodus 26:31 – This was not the first time we see “skillfully” being said about how to make the things of the Tabernacle. They were to use the best hands who had the most skill and for those hands to give it their all. God is asking for our best because He deserves our best. Yet when we take a moment to think about the things He has placed in front of us to do, what percentage of our best is He getting? Like with loving your spouse, or with sharing God’s love with the people at your school, or with how you speak about Jesus with your friends, what percentage of your best is God getting? You can give 100%, but has He only been getting 99%? 50%? Less? Know God’s not here shaming you for not giving your best nor am I here doing that. He is just reminding both of us that He deserves our best and we have it in our power to give our best to Him. Today, you have opportunities to live for God in front of you, give it 100%. • And the part that remains of the curtains of the tent, the half curtain that remains, shall hang over the back of the tabernacle. And the extra that remains in the length of the curtains, the cubit on the one side, and the cubit on the other side, shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle, on this side and that side, to cover it. Exodus 26:12-13 – God even has a purpose for your extra. God already knew what Moses and whoever would be putting this all together we’re thinking…the math doesn’t add up, we’ll have leftover curtain if we make that much. Even before they had a chance to speak, God reminded of something. He knows what He is doing. To us, it seems like extra, to God it was the exact amount needed to get the job done right. So maybe the extra you find yourself with today has a purpose too. Somehow things worked out that you have an extra hour of free time, maybe that wasn’t a mistake but there’s a purpose for that “extra” hour. Maybe there’s a reason your dinner table has more seats than you have people in your home currently. Maybe there’s more to all this. Maybe it never was “extra” to God but the exact amount you needed if your were to be doing everything He’s called you to. Am I saying that if you have any surplus of anything in your life that it must have a purpose? Possibly, what I do know though is I can give that surplus a purpose if I choose to do so. If it can’t be brought into Heaven with me, or if it can’t even be brought into tomorrow, let’s see if there is a way we can use our extra purposefully.
