Exodus – Chapter 25

  • And you shall set the bread of the Presence on the table before me regularly. Exodus 25:30 – Where we left off Moses in the last chapter was him going up Mount Sinai by himself to hear from the Lord. He was up there forty days and nights, and in that space God laid out the law for His people. He began His talk to Moses by outlining the design plans for the Tabernacle and the pieces within it. This would be the place the people of Israel could offer sacrifice for sin and hear from the Lord. One piece that was outlined to be made was the table of the showbread. A table, overlaid with gold, was to be made, and on it we learn was to be the bread of the Presence. We’d learn later that there was to be twelve loaves of this bread continually on this table, and once a week the priests would replace the bread and be able to enjoy the old loaves. While a seemingly simple aspect to the Tabernacle, note that the creation of this table is the very next thing after the Ark of the Covenant was to be created. The Ark would be for atonement, and this table would have been a visual reminder to the priests and people that God desired communion with His people. In our culture, and especially theirs, a dinner table is about fellowship and fulfilling the need of hunger and communion. God wanted His people to be always reminded of His presence with them and His desire was to have fellowship with His people. While we may not have this table or the bread of Presence to remind us of God’s presence with us, what we do have is better. We have the Bread of Life. God has given us Himself, His Holy Spirit, to be with us continually to remind us of the presence of Jesus with us. Find joy in the truth that we have the presence of our God with us always. • Exodus 25 Daily DEVO And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst. Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make it. Exodus25:8-9 – Sometimes God asks us to give and to serve when we don’t fully understand the whole picture. For the Israelites, this was entirely new to them. A sanctuary, an ark, a set of laws to live in unity with God. All foreign, all confusing, but God understood that and was patient and gave clear instructions along the way. God also understands how foreign it is to follow God wholeheartedly compared to the world and also how confusing some of His directions can be at first. This is why it’s important to have a habit of seeking Him. That’s done by reading His Word, prayer, corporate worship, invested spiritual relationships. God’s plans and will is big but not impossible for us to understand. He wants the world to know about Him and He wants you to deeply know Him. The confusing parts about that journey can begin to be cleared up as we pursue Him. The more we spend time with God, the more familiar we get with His heart and what He’s leading us to do each day. • The poles shall remain in the rings of the ark; they shall not be taken from it. Exodus 25:15 – We have a saying that if there is something gross we “wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole.” Now gross isn’t the reason the poles were added to the ark, it was because of it’s holiness. The poles were to remain in the rings attached to the ark so no one would find themselves tempted to touch the ark due to the poles no longer being where they should be. What then is something God is telling you to keep the “pole in the rings” of so you can remain distant and non-tempted? Rather than a holy ark, is there something sinful that needs a ten foot pole attached to it so you won’t find yourself touching it? Has that something once had a pole, but you removed it so you can draw closer to it? Distance from sinful things is needed if you want your walk with Jesus to be everything it could be. What are some things then that can help create that distance? An accountability partner, a social media fast, rehab, a picture up of your loved one as a reminder who your sin is also hurting. Whatever your “pole” looks like, put it up where it needs to be so the things God is calling you not to touch you won’t touch. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1908
