- Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.” 8 And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.” Exodus 24:7-8 – Moses by this time had verbally shared the words of the law with the people of Israel and they agreed to follow all the words the Lord had given them. Now Moses had written down the law, to make sure there was no confusion or self-interpretation of the verbal proclamation Moses gave to the people. He had now read it through to all the people, giving them the words of the law a second time, and they agreed to be obedient to all it says. Whether they meant what they said, or just said it out of fear of what they were witnessing of the Lord at this time, that’s unknown. What we know though is through what happens here is the people entered into a covenant with the Lord to faithfully follow all that God told them to do and His expectation was for them to be faithful to that covenant. We, who are followers of Jesus, too have entered a covenant that was made by blood. Yet this covenant isn’t based on the law and sealed with the blood of a lamb, it’s a covenant based on grace and sealed with the blood of Jesus Himself. As God expected the Israelites to follow His words in their covenant, the Lord expects us to follow His words in our covenant with Him. He commands us to love one another, to make disciples, and to forgive (along with many other things). When we make our proclamation to follow Jesus, know the expectation from the Lord is we do just that. Evaluate today how you may not be fulfilling your end of this covenant agreement. - Exodus 24 Daily DEVO And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank. Exodus 24:11 – The chief men were able to sit in the presence of God, able to eat and drink in His presence, and not experience the wrath of God. They were able to have a perfect fellowship with God. For them, this was a once in a lifetime experience, to have fellowship with God this way. We must remember that their once in a lifetime experience is what we have available to us everyday. Because of Jesus, we have perfect fellowship with God eternally. We can sit, eat, and drink calmly in His presence not worried about His wrath coming on us because we’ve been perfected in Christ. Church please don’t take this for granted. You’ve been given access to God, take hold of it. The God who has the joy, peace, healing, acceptance, and love you need is available to you. Seek fellowship with Him and find what you are looking for. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 818
- Moses alone shall come near to the Lord, but the others shall not come near, and the people shall not come up with him. Exodus 24:2 – What was the message here, Moses can come, but others can’t. This was the reality for the people of Israel then. Sure they saw firsthand the parting of the Red Sea, the pillar of fire leading them by night, and the cloud covering the mountain here, but they weren’t allowed to draw close to God. How blessed are we that this isn’t our story. Sure we haven’t seen a sea part, but we have freedom to draw close to God. The veil that separated us from the holiness of God has been torn because of Jesus and we can draw as near as we want. I wonder though how many of us who have this freedom use it. We can draw close to God, the One with all the answers and the One who has all we need to make it through today. Take hold of this beautiful blessing each day and draw close to God. Spend time talking with Him, read scripture to learn about Him, serve Him. Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1907
