Exodus – Chapter 20

  • Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Exodus 20:8 – Want to hear something crazy? As believers in Christ, under the new covenant, we are not commanded to keep the sabbath. I know, that so counters what we’ve always been told, so let’s break this down. The commands we see in our chapter were given to the Israelites for them to follow under their Jewish faith. Jesus though fulfilled the requirements of the law and instituted a new covenant with the Lord at the cross. We now are no longer under the law (Romans 6:14), not obligated to follow the Jewish law. In Acts 15, when the Jerusalem council listed out the things that the gentile believers should follow to promote unity between them and the Jewish believers, keeping the Sabbath wasn’t one of them. In Colossians 2:16-17 we see that there should not be judgement over one another in partaking in even the Sabbath. So what then should we do with all this as believers? Should we never rest? No, God calls us to rest, we should rest each day in the freedoms we have been blessed with in the Lord to not have to work for our salvation. Does it matter what day we rest? No. Should we judge others on when and how they rest? No, that’s between them and the Lord. Does this mean it doesn’t matter if we go to church? Of course we should go to church, but see even from the command in Exodus 20 that the Sabbath day wasn’t talking about cooperate worship. It was about simply taking a day of rest from work. As Christians we are to find our rest in the Lord each day, enjoying the fellowship we have with Him. We are called to live fully for the mission of the Gospel, and find rest by the still waters He brings us near. Yet let us not judge one another on their ways of rest with the Lord, but let’s do what we can for our brothers and sisters in Christ to help them be refreshed in the Lord how we can. • Exodus 20 Daily DEVO And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it. Exodus 20:26 – God wanted them to respect the holiness of the altar and what they were doing there. We too need to respect the holiness and seriousness that comes with coming to the altar. But we have a different story than they did back then. Our story is different because of Jesus. He laid Himself on the altar, perfecting us in God’s eyes, that now we can come to God completely revealed and not be ashamed. Meaning you can come to God with everything laid out in the open and know you’ll be welcomed into His arms because of what Jesus did for you. Always remember what it took for you to be able to come to God like this, but also never let your mistakes now hold you back from coming to God. You are forever welcomed in His presence because of Jesus. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 814

  • And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” Exodus 20:1-2 – We have the full list of the Ten Commandments within our chapter today, yet after reading this morning, might I suggest there is a “Command 0?” No, I’m not trying to be heretical, I just noticed how God started of His message. He called them to remember. To remember who He is to them and what He has done for them. That then is Command 0, remember. Everything starts with you remembering who God is to you and what He’s done for you. He’s holy, sovereign, creator of the universe, your redeemer, your Heavenly Father. He’s plucked you out of your pit, set you on solid ground, wiped away the sin, and called you holy. Remember. When life and the enemy seeks to fill you with lies about who God is remember who He truly is. When life and the enemy seeks to tell you what God is able to do remember what He’s already done. Remember.  I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1903
