- “For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord.” Exodus 12:12 – Here we see the tenth and final plague on Egypt that finally broke the hard heart of Pharaoh. God was going to strike the firstborn in all the land of Egypt, and through this all would know His power. We see here the Lord say He would execute judgement on all the “gods” of Egypt. Something I didn’t note until this study of the plagues was how each plague uniquely showed God’s power over an Egyptian idol. Turning the water on the Nile to blood showed God was more powerful than Khmum, the guardian of the Nile. The boils showed God’s power over Imhotep, their god of medicine. Even blocking out the sun showed God’s power over their main god Ra, the god of the sun. Who was another “god” that the Lord showed His power over? Pharaoh himself. To the Egyptians the Pharaoh was a literal god in flesh. This final plague showed Israel, every Egyptian, and especially Pharaoh himself that the Lord was stronger than every god the Egyptians could muster up. What then needs to happen in our story that proves to us the Lord is stronger than any “god” this world can muster? Nothing in all creation is above our God and nothing can overpower our God. If then He is the one seated on the highest throne, if He is the one who will execute justice on all things, and if He is the Kings of Kings and Lord of Lords…why would we ever give our life to anything else? However you’ve given yourself to anything else, make the change today to worship Jesus and Him alone. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3156
- Exodus 12 Daily DEVO At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock. Exodus 12:29 – God’s wrath comes on all who refuse to follow Him. We see that pretty clearly in this passage, from the firstborn of royalty to the firstborn in prison felt the wrath of God. We must remember that God doesn’t look at our financial records and church attendance or even our community service records to determine if we have life with Him or not. God’s wrath comes to all who don’t follow Him yet for those who do follow God, His wrath was satisfied in Christ’s sacrifice. We have then free access to God’s unending love because of Jesus. So if you follow God know you are completely free from God’s wrath because of Jesus. Follow God with all you have and live knowing you’re free because of Jesus. – Daily DEVO 806
- And if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor shall take according to the number of persons; according to what each can eat you shall make your count for the lamb. Exodus 12:4 – The story held within this chapter is a massive one for the people of Israel. After 430 years of being in Egypt, their bonds of slavery were broken and they were free to travel to the promise land. What captured my focus today was the way God gave these instructions for the Passover. Notice God gives clear directions on how He wants His people to follow Him, yet in this verse He gives ways to make it possible for even the poorer of the land to follow Him. God didn’t want things like money or lack thereof to be the deciding factor of if you could be a follower of God. He wanted to make it possible for any who wanted to follow Him to be able to. This is our story today. God knows we all don’t have money, talent, clean pasts, smarts, good families, or knowledge of the Bible. That’s why He isn’t asking for that in our steps towards Him. What He asks is for us to set aside the life of willfully walking away from intimacy with Him and begin walking towards that closeness instead. God hasn’t made it difficult for you to follow Him, He’s inviting you to come into His story and dwell with Him. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1895
