And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were weeping in the entrance of the tent of meeting. Numbers 25:6 – To understand the insanity of this verse, we need to explain more of the surrounding details. After a couple chapters of God protecting Israel from curses, Israel chooses to walk into a curse for themselves. At the direction of Balaam, Moab sent their temple prostitutes to entice the men of Israel away from God. Israel committed great adultery, spiritually and sexually, in worship of Baal, an idol that would become a great trap in Israel’s future. God commanded that all those who did this were to be killed, and while Moses and Israel were weeping over all this, our vese happens. An Israelite brings a Midian woman, thought to be a chief priestess of Baal, by the Tent of Meeting, in front of everyone, and begins having sex with her. He may have even done this within the Tent of Meeting! You can’t get more flagrant of sin than that! Phinehas, the grandson of Aaron, sees this and in the passion of the Lord spears them through while in their vile act. What a crazy story! What though ought we take away from it? Know our world is filled with flagrant sin just as vile as this within our story. What though are you going to do? Are you going to stand around like most of the people did in our story and just watch it play out, or are you going to stand up for the Lord? Now please don’t go spearing people, but be willing to be passionate in our stance against sin. Sin condemns those to Hell who remain in it and the Lord hates sin. What better reasons do we need to be against sin in our life? When we see the enemy working his sin into the lives of those around us, stand up against it.
