And you shall keep guard over the sanctuary and over the altar, that there may never again be wrath on the people of Israel. Numbers 18:5 - We have the Lord speaking directly to Aaron, the high priest of Israel. After having the horrendous situation where Korah and the 250 leaders tried to take over priesthood, God gave some new commands to Aaron and his sons. They were to guard the Tent of Meeting and all the holy items associated with it. That meant the altar, the ark, and everything else inside the tent. Aaron and his sons had the responsibility of keeping guard over these things so that no one who wasn’t supposed to draw near to them would and the Lord wouldn’t have to release His wrath on His people again. That highlights such a key part of the priests’ role. They were to protect what was holy so God’s wrath didn’t have to be displayed. So in our day, how could this apply? Believers today are the priesthood of the Lord and we too have been given something to protect and keep holy. The message of the Gospel. No falsehoods should come near it and no enemy should draw near to pervert it. When the Gospel message remains pure and holy, God’s wrath is stayed and people find freedom and salvation. In Numbers Aaron and the other priests had such a vital role in keeping the holy things holy so God’s people could avoid the Lord’s wrath. Today believers need to fight to keep what is holy as holy so the world can have the chance of avoiding the wrath of God by hearing the life giving, holy message of the Gospel.
