Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving. And the people of Israel also wept again and said, “Oh that we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic.6 But now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.” Numbers 11:4-6 – To say that the Israelites had rose colored glasses on is an understatement. Notice how they spoke of their time in Egypt. We had free fish to eat and we had all the juicy vegetables we could desire. Egypt was so much better than today for all we have is this manna from Heaven to look at. Yet zoom out and take a snapshot of their actual story. Centuries of harsh slavery in Egypt was just ended in their day and God was leading to a new home to call their very own. Everyday God’s provision came with manna, a food that came with the morning dew that was sweet and took care of all their nutritional needs. Yet this wasn’t enough for them, they’d rather remember the highlights of slavery than enjoy the current provision of the Lord. Here we can see something that truly displeases the heart of God, when we dismiss the provision He is offering to us currently to dwell on our past life apart from Him. While yes, there may have been some high times in our pre-Jesus life, let’s remember as well the intense brokenness and lostness we were in during those times too. God didn’t save us from blessing to bring us into brokenness, it’s the other way around. Choose to cherish the ways God is providing for you today and don’t dwell on the “glory days” of your pre-Jesus life. If God saved you from it, then you weren’t supposed to have it in your story. Praise the Lord instead we have what we have now and not what we had then. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3361
