And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” 4 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female. Matthew 19:3-4 – Once again the religious leaders of Jesus’ day come hoping to trap Jesus in His words so that they might discredit Him. This time it was about the topic of divorce, a topic that was highly divisive then, far more than it is today. Essentially the questioners, or we could say trappers, were seeing if Jesus aligned more with one rabbinical side of teaching or another’s and either way Jesus answered they had plans to attack His stance. Yet which side did Jesus take? Neither, He instead brought the question back to the design God started with. What Jesus did here can be such a wonderful tool for us in seeking answers to life’s difficult questions. Rather than determining which camp of human opinions we should align with, instead go back to whatever was God’s design for that thing and let that be where you stand. When it comes to marriage questions, what was the original design of marriage? When it comes to issues with another person, what is God’s design for relationships? When it comes to handling future plans, what is God’s design for how you use your life? Surprisingly you may discover the answer you were seeking comes more swiftly when you start with understanding whatever God’s design was. For what He makes is perfect and He declares good, if we then strive for His design of things, we will never find ourselves on the wrong path.
