Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Matthew 12:31 – Let’s talk about this big concept of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit since it’s a common one in the church. Can it happen and have you done it? Let’s understand what’s happening in the passage. Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit, cast out a demon in front of the religious leaders and the leaders claimed Jesus did this by the power of satan, and this Jesus called blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. So scripturally, what is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? It is when one accredits the work of the Holy Spirit through the incarnate Jesus to satan instead. Meaning that this isn’t something that can happen today for Jesus is no longer on earth performing such works but is instead seated on the throne of Heaven. If then we can’t commit blasphemy of the Holy Spirit like this, then is there no unforgivable sin? No, there still is a sin that will cause us to never see Heaven or the face of Jesus once we die. That sin is the rejection of the Holy Spirit. While we can’t today accredit the work of the incarnate Jesus to satan like in the passage, we can find ourselves in a continual state of rejection the Holy Spirit in our life. If we make the choice to never accept the free gift of salvation and remain in total rejection of the Holy Spirit coming into our life to save us, there is no hope of Heaven for such a life but only the future of Hell. As a believer in Christ, do not fear the possibly of blasphemy of the Holy Spirit or committing the unforgivable sin. The very fact that you desire a life with Jesus is proof that you could never commit such things. Only through a complete rejection of Jesus and the saving power of the Holy Spirit could you find yourself lost, but thanks be to Jesus we have salvation available.
