From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matthew 4:17 – This chapter unpacks for us the very beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry. After being baptized and tested in the wilderness, Jesus started doing the things we know all about form the Gospel stories. Jesus was gathering in the synagogues and Jesus was healing every disease and affliction. Jesus cast out demons, healed those who were paralyzed, and even began inviting people to become followers of Him. Again such things are what we know Jesus was all about during His ministry years on earth, but what we learn from our verse above is what Jesus was truly about during this time. Before He went about healing or calling disciples, Jesus preached repentance. Jesus was a sharer of the Gospel. Above casting out demons or giving sight to the blind, Jesus’ main purpose was to be the bringer of the good news to the people around Him. Like Jesus, we too have many roles we play and many things we do with our lives. Maybe we are a parent and have all the responsibilities attached to that, or maybe we carry the title of boss, coach, friend, or sister. We may carry different titles and we may be about doing a lot of different things, but what we should be known for above all is being a carrier of the good news. Jesus made preaching the good news His first mission for it was the most important. Above all other roles and responsibilities, know helping others know the Gospel is most important.
