Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them on the day of the wrath of the Lord. In the fire of his jealousy, all the earth shall be consumed; for a full and sudden end he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth. Zephaniah 1:18 – With it being the Christmas season, we’ve recently watched the classic Christmas movie Rudolph. In it there is a song that goes like this, “Silver and gold, Silver and gold, everyone wishes for silver and gold. How do you measure its worth? Just by the pleasure it gives here on Earth.” Here in our chapter we have the Lord seeing the silver and gold idols that His people had chosen to worship over Himself. Israel had chosen to imitate the nations around them and begin to worship their gods of silver and gold, and yes, this did give them pleasure on Earth like the song spoke about. Yet the Lord was making it clear to His people, worshiping these gods of silver and gold and devoting yourselves to the pleasure you find having them in your life is not going to bring everlasting joy but the wrath of the Lord. Today as I write this devotion, its Christmas morning. While a chapter of prophecy around God’s wrath is not the way I expected to start my Christmas morning, it is good for us to see that the “silver and gold” of the world shouldn’t be what we make our lives about, nor Christmas about. As God was calling His people to do in this chapter, let us as well set aside the silver and gold to make our lives about the Lord instead. And how to you measure the worth of the Lord? An impossible task, but what greater pleasure can we find than the truth that He sent His Son so we could be with Him. Merry Christmas! I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3316
Question To Ponder: What may be our versions of “silver and gold” we devote ourselves to?
