And Aaron and his sons did all the things that the Lord commanded by Moses. Leviticus 8:36 – In our chapter we see the ordination of Aaron and his sons as the holy priesthood for the Lord. Now let’s be honest, as we read through this chapter and see all the aspects to the ceremony, it’s a little odd. Only certain parts of the animals are to be burned on the altar and others burned outside the camp. Some blood was sprinkled, some poured out, some was even put on the men’s big toes. As you go through the particulars of the ordination, a lot just doesn’t make much sense to us, but these were the commands of God that made sense to Him. Let’s think of it this way, if you’ve ever been to or seen a vastly different culture than your own, then likely you’ve felt some of their ways were odd to you and didn’t make sense. To them it was totally normal, but to you they were strange and confusing. What we are seeing in this chapter is people being invited into the “culture” of God. A holy culture, one that is set apart from the world and set aside wholly for the Lord. For the world looking in, the ways of this culture are foreign and confusing, but for those within the culture we see, or at least trust, the purpose behind the ways God calls us to move. As with the ceremony, God’s ways of moving are still strange today to the world. Why He would call someone out of a good job to work at a church or why He would allow someone to walk away from a family or why choose this path for us may just not make sense. Let us remember we are in God’s culture following God’s ways, not our own. As we draw nearer to the Lord and spend more time with Him, His ways begin to become our ways and we’ll see the purpose behind them even when the world doesn’t.
