Fire shall be kept burning on the altar continually; it shall not go out. Leviticus 6:11 – In the area outside the Tent of Meeting there was the altar where all the sacrifices would be made upon. What we learn from our passage was this wasn’t just a grill that the priests turned on whenever there was a sacrifice to be burned, but it was an altar that had a fire that was to never go out. This meant that a job of some priests was to constantly watch the fire of the altar and never let it go out. While this was an important job, likely it wasn’t a glamourous one that got a lot of praise. During the day when all the sacrifices were being made, the fire kept itself going with all the meat being put on it. At night, when the fire really needed tending to, there was no spotlight on them doing their work. Just the crackling of the wood at 2am while everyone else was asleep. When the work God calls us to do seems so unseen and sometimes even pointless, know if God called you to it there is purpose behind it. For these priests, while keeping a fire burning seemed like such a small role, imagine the chaos that would has ensued if the fire of God on the altar went out and the whole sacrificial system had to be stopped until they heard from God what to do. We may not ever understand the full purpose behind the work God calls us to. We may not get the spotlight or the applause. Know though God sees the faithful work you are doing that you feel no one sees of cares about. And if God sees and God knows and God is pleased, then what more could we truly ask for.
