And he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering and kill it at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall throw the blood against the sides of the altar. Leviticus 3:2 - There is a heavy aspect to these offerings that we are seeing described to us in these few chapters. Yes, it was going to be a sacrifice for them because the animal had to be from their own herd and not just some wild animal they caught. It also had to be from the best of their herd or flock. Yet while not overly obvious in our verse, do you notice who is the one having to give the death blow to the animal? The one giving the offering. While the priest was likely helping, what we can gather from the text is that most likely it was the responsibility of the one giving the offering who had to kill the animal. Could you imagine how differently people today would handle themselves if they had to slaughter an animal to be made right with God after they sinned? Most of us don’t even enjoying knowing how our food is made, let alone having to be the one doing to killing. Do you think the way you handle sin would be different if each time you had to personally kill an animal sacrifice? Do you think the way we’d handle sin would be different if each time we sinned we personally had to hammer a nail into Jesus’ flesh? I know, that’s a lot to take in, but God’s heart was and is for us to see the weight of sin. It’s not something that He sees as a small thing that doesn’t really matter. Sin brings death and death has to be given to cover sin. Let’s be grateful that our hands don’t have to get bloodied to deal with our sin anymore, Jesus took care of that for us. While sin is taken care of, choose to remember the high cost that had to be paid to cover it. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3205
