Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment.’ Exodus 6:6 – Where we left Moses in the previous chapter was in a space of real discouragement. Moses boldly came before the king of Egypt, demanded that he let his slave labor force go free, and not surprisingly it didn’t go well. While the Lord did make it clear beforehand that this wouldn’t be an easy journey and that this process wasn’t going to be immediate, Moses still found himself in a place of despair seeing the how things were unfolding for this mission. God though, as always, knew exactly what to say. The Lord made it clear to Moses who was the one in control and the one that was going to make the impossible happen. This mission’s success didn’t rely on Moses’ speaking ability or power, it relied solely on the Lord, something we see affirmed with all the “I will” statements in these verses. God voiced He was the one that would redeem, deliver, bring out of slavery, and bring into blessing. Moses wasn’t the plan, he was simply the one God used to share God’s plan with God’s people. While sometimes we can find ourselves believing we’re the “plan,” we’re not. We aren’t the ones to save our family, or change our friend, or heal our parent, or redeem the world. Only God can do that. While the mission at times can seem overwhelming, and even defeating, remember who the plan is centered around and who it’s not center around.
