At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick. And Jeroboam said to his wife, “Arise, and disguise yourself, that it not be known that you are the wife of Jeroboam, and go to Shiloh. Behold, Ahijah the prophet is there, who said of me that I should be king over this people.” 1 Kings 14:1-2 – Jeroboam, king of Israel after the divide of the kingdom, was a horrible, idolatrous king. He lead the entire nation of God’s people away from pursuing the Lord and offered them idols of gold to worship instead. Now, in his time of need due to his son being sick, Jeroboam seeks God’s help. Just like in the previous chapter when his hand was withered, only then did he seek the Lord’s help. Clearly he knew that his idols of gold could do nothing to save him or his family. The idols couldn’t save his hand and the idols could heal his sin, yet only when such things were present in his life did his attention turn to the Lord. God is inviting us today to turn our attention onto Him. Not simply because we need something from Him, but because He’s already done something for us by offering us salvation. We don’t have to wait till we are in a dire place to call upon the Lord, we can call on Him when life is a blessing, and even when life is ordinary. In fact this is God’s desire, that our attention be on Him always, not just when the world is caving in on us and all our idols have proven themselves worthless to help us. Today then turn your gaze onto the Lord. Today may be a dire day, a difficult day, or a delightful day, either way today is the day God invites us to look to Him.
