For does not my house stand so with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. For will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire? 2 Samuel 23:5 – I’ve never built a house before, but I do know a few truths about building a house. Without a foundation, the house you build isn’t going to last long, and without supports, the house isn’t going to remain standing. When it comes to the “house” that is our life, it too can’t stand long without the proper foundation and supports. David, in this final psalm of his in the last parts of his life, voices his understanding of this reality. His life only stands because God is the foundation and because God is providing the support. God establish a forever promise with David and it’s because God is keeping that promise secure that it is still good. The hope today is that you too can declare your house stands so only because of God. It’s only because God is your foundation and only because God is providing the support that your life is still upright today. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you are standing strong today because your hands have strengthened and upheld your “house.” If God didn’t allow the air in your lungs to be there, it wouldn’t be. This is how much in need we are of God’s foundation and support to uphold us. Acknowledging this truth, let’s choose to live our lives for the Lord like David’s Mighty Men did for him. Relentless, faithful, and willing to sacrifice. God is being forever faithful to us, upholding and establishing us in this life and the life to come.
